Blazers Owner Paul Allen Contributes $1 Million to Washington Gun Control Measure
The initiative would ask Washington voters to raise the age for purchasing semi-automatic weapons to 21.

Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder and Seattle native better known locally as the owner of the Portland Trail Blazers, has contributed $1 million to a Washington ballot initiative to tighten restrictions on gun ownership.

Allen announced his donation on Twitter, and the Seattle Times first noted his message.

"Initiative 1639 is a reasonable and necessary measure that will improve the safety of our schools and our communities, which is why I have contributed a million dollars to the campaign," Allen tweeted today. "I hope people throughout the state will support the campaign, so that we can qualify and pass this important initiative into law."

If it makes the November ballot, the initiative would ask Washington voters to raise the age for purchasing semi-automatic weapons to 21; create a stronger background check system; require training for purchases and beef up storage requirements.

Trail Blazers Owner Paul Allen Donates $1M To Washington Gun Initiative

Paul Allen, Microsoft co-founder and owner of the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trail Blazers, has donated $1 million to a campaign seeking to raise the age to purchase semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21 in Washington state.

Allen made the announcement on Twitter Monday.

The Alliance for Gun Responsibility says Initiative 1639 also would create a background check system similar to the one required for handguns, require completion of a firearms safety course and create standards for safe gun storage.

The group’s initiative effort comes after lawmakers in the Democratic-controlled Statehouse declined to bump the minimum age to buy semi-automatic weapons after the February mass shooting at a Florida high school.

The alliance needs roughly 260,000 petition signatures before the initiative can qualify for the 2018 ballot.

In 2014, Allen donated $500,000 to a successful campaign seeking to expand background checks on gun sales in the state.

This initiative will surely stop mass shootings. How will anyone under 21 get a weapon if it's illegal? Wait, what if we just outlawed mass shootings altogether?? Holy balls I think I'm on to something here guys.

Seriously though, what is the projected, or hopeful outcome of this bill? I understand trying to come up with solutions to the mass shooting problem we have in this country, but I just don't see how this law would help. Many mass shooters were ALREADY too young to buy weapons, it didn't stop them. They just grabbed their parents (who were OVER 21) weapons. I just don't see a solution here.

Tighter restrictions, storage, etc I think trying to find a solution is hard but I’m glad people are trying (well some people).

There is no solution, but deterrents can often help.Doing nothing certainly hasn't changed anything.

It's a fair question. There are some who are giving up being fans of their favorite NFL team because players kneel during the national anthem. The owner of the Blazers has given $1 million in support of additional gun restrictions. I can see some being upset over that.
