CB4 and I were arguing about whether or not Larry Bird could play powerforward. CB4 thinks Larry Bird was a small forward only while I say Larry Bird was a small forward and a power forward. What do you guys think?

I think ya'll are both right in some ways. CB4 is in the fact that Larry Legend never had to play the power foward position since he played with a great center and power foward most of his career. He played along side center Robert Parrish and power foward Kevin McHale. Unless there was some major injuries and or some major foul trouble, he never would have to play the position. Also, it was a different era and the game was played differently. It was much more physical back in Bird's day. Most power foward's were bangers and were not finesse players. Bird would be going against big guys that would probably have some good offensive numbers when he would have to gaurd them. He'd be going up against Barkley, Malone, Rodman, James Worthy, etc. I personally wouldnt like that matchup and would much rather play him at the 3.On the other hand, in today's game with Bird's play and height combined with the way power fowards are less physical and the way the refs call the game, Bird would be really great at the power foward position. Bottom line: Bird never really had to play power foward, but he probably could for small stints.

I know he played with great PFs and Cs but im pretty sure he played quite a few games at PF in his career. I could be mistaken though, not 100% sure on that.

early in his career Bird played a lot of PF as McHale was playing 20 minutes per game though Cedric Maxwell could be labeled as their PF.

Larry Bird wasn't a specific position. He was a basketball player. He could pass, shoot, rebound and STEAL THE BALL! He could do it all

Yes, Larry Bird did play PF, I'd say 85% of the time he played SF.

Larry Bird played power forward sometimes. For our mock draft, I don't think he should be playing PF. Against guys like Duncan, Malone, Rodman, and Ewing, I think he would get beat up pretty badly.

All I'm saying is that putting him at PF in the mock draft is sort of putting him out of position because he usually didn't play PF...

Bird played guard a couple of times. He could probably have been able to play all 5 positions, like Magic.

Larry did play a lot of PF, that's why McHale is a two time winner of the 6th man award.http://www.databasebasketball.com/awards/sixth.htmLarry did a lot of posting up and used his passing skills and fad away jumper to be very effective.

    Re: Larry Bird's Position?

I think he was a natural 3, but he was obviously versatile and skilled enough to play the 4. If I had to label him as one position, I would go with the 3.
