So the land of fruits and nuts is splitting into three parts. What will we call the third part?

    Got it, tacos.
The land of fruits, nuts and tacos.

Those of you more knowledgeable about this than I, what’s the federal laws for adding a new state? Wouldn’t the federal government have to have congress vote the states in?

    No.

Stupid idea, some ahole with more money than sense shelled out to put it on ballot.

Three states with their own governors, legislatures, judiciaries? Yeah, real efficient (sarcasm).

Three states arguing over which long-established California laws to keep or discard.

Two rich states and one poor state.

What do you do with statewide institutions, like University of California? Does someone in LA no longer get in-state tuition at UC Davis?

What about state parks? Three separate administrations to oversee three sets of parks?

Yes, if the voters approve the proposal (unlikely) and it doesn't get overturned by the courts, the US Congress would have to approve adding the new states.

It would help pave the way for Puerto Rico to finally become a state.

    How so?
What about California splitting, would change the mind of People in Puerto Rico voting to become a State?

The Democrats like it because it gives them (in their mind) Four more Democrat Senators. You can see it in the boarders they draw. California is predominately Democrat in the Coastal strip from
San Francisco, including Marin to LA. But they divide up this small geographic band to give the other two area a piece of the larger democrat population.
This will never fly in Congress.

Last time there was a vote in PR to become a state it passed with 60% of the vote.

A big reason is PR would add two more dem sens to congress.

Also the majority of Americans like the symmetry of 50 stars on the flag. No one wants a fucked up flag with 51 stars. If we're going to fuck up the flag we might as well let PR join the party.

The man behind this, Tim Draper, is a republican. He originally wanted to split California into 6 states. He's the one who came up with the borders.

I have no idea what the Constitution says about this but if there is a Congressional way to do it, I feel confident it involves some sort of overwhelming approval by Congress. I wonder if the provision about adding new States would be appropriate?

Edit: After all, we did find a way to add Hawaii and Alaska.

I think you explained it quite well. He did not get what he wanted. He got what you would do if you wanted to gerrymander it for the Democrats.

Actually, I think it was 97% in favor. But I don't think you will find too many Republicans going out of their way to give the Democrats two more Senate seats when only 23% of the electorate
voted in this election. Something didn't smell right here.

As I understand it he's not so interested in the D vs. R politics of it, he just wants to pay less tax. Cutting out some of the rural areas means he has to pay for fewer freeloaders. His original proposal had 6 states including a separate state for 'Silicon Valley'.

Fuck then we’d have to add two more stars... for two shitty states.
