<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Source: Mitchell Will Be Named Coach Of The Year23rd April, 2007 - 7:18 pmNational Post -Sources have confirmed Sam Mitchell will be named the NBA's coach of the year. The National Post has learned that Mitchell has edged other strong contenders such as Utah's Jerry Sloan and Dallas's Avery Johnson."We had a lot of [new] guys, we had a language barrier at the beginning of the year, we had so many obstacles that we had to overcome," Toronto's lone All-Star, Chris Bosh, said Monday before the results of the vote were revealed."We had to gel quickly as a team. And for Sam to put us in an environment where we could function, and create an offence where everybody can touch the ball and share the ball and get open shots, that was tough on his part."</div>Is he the best coach in the NBA? NopeDid he help the Raptors skip a few processes in the development cycle? Somewhat yesReference - Development Cycle: Usually teams barely miss the playoffs one year, get their asses handed to them the next as a low seed, and then make noise in the playoffs the year after that. :dunno:

Biggest joke ever. Colangelo is EOY, but Mitch sure as hell isn't COY. It should be someone who actually installed a system that worked.

I think it should have gone to Jerry Sloan. But that's just me. :dunno:

No, they didn't rack up that many wins and it wasn't because of him. Sloan would probably be my pick too.

Its true. Mitchells 200 "shats" philosophy led us to a 2-8 start. And than because asked for a different system and more minutes to Bargnani.

Gosh Dammit, we had the best turn around in the NBA. Jerry Sloan already had a developed AK47, Deron Williams had a decent rookie year, and Boozer just needed minutes to get hot, I do give him credit for bringing up Okur and other role players on the team. But sam mitchell did so much more, he was near responsible for making a Bosh a leader and an allstar, he brought up Bargnani nicely, adjusted Garbo to the NBA game, inserted Humphries into that lineup, and he just magically just started producing, Rasho nesterovic made a decent improvement from last year, not to mention putting a new team of 9 together.

I just don't understand why all the Raptors fans were hating on mitchell saying he was the worst coach and saying he should be fired and now they're flocking to his defense.

I think it should of been D'Antoni or Avery... but from where Toronto was last year, and where they are now, I won't hate.

I personally like the choice. Heck of a job turning the morbid franchise around. No one expected this much. Reminds me of the 2004-05 Bulls, Skiles should have gotten coach of the year that year.

Why don't they re-name the award, 'Turn-around coach of the year'....because it's not about the best coach or who did the best coaching job during the particular season, it's all about what coach turned around a sh*tty team.... I've always liked Mitchell and been against the Raptors fans that have hated him the last few seasons, I just didn't think he had the talent to succeed. Now Colangelo add's a ton of experienced players. (Not to mention T.J. Ford) Andrea Bargnani Rasho Nesterovic Anthony Parker Jorge Garbajosa Juan Dixon Add that with the fact that the eastern conference was a complete joke this season, it's a nice story but it's that impressive. I have always liked Mitchell's toughness and not being afraid to go after a player, he had a nice season...but I don't think he's coach of the year. I think Colangelo deserves a ton of credit for the turnaround. He added smart/experienced players and substituted lazy or stupid players like Mike James/Charlie Villanueva.

Yeah, Mitchell did a nice job, but the success of the Raptors is all Colangelo. You know what? I could see this same thing happen to Doc Rivers. If we land a top 2 pick (knock on wood) trade for a decent veteran, and stay healthy, we'll improve TREMENDOUSLY and Doc will get a ton of credit. If that happens, I will laugh... HARD.

Jerry Sloan has made a career out of being completely unappreciated. In my opinion Jerry Sloan is a top 5 coach of all-time.

I do think Avery Johnson deserved the award but he's definitely up there.

Sam Mitchell is not a top tier coach...this is ridiculous...Just last year he was voted as the worst coach in the NBA in Sports Illustrated. Just because we improved a ton doesn't mean he should win it. He obviously did a great job improving our team, but I think only great coaches should win this award. If I had a vote, it would go to Jerry Sloan.

Having start Aruajo and Matt Bonner at center at times is horrid and unbearable. No one gives him credit for bringing up Chris Bosh, no one gives him credit for bringing up Charlie Villeneuva, who in Milwaukee's system totally flopped and stopped producing. Colangelo brought in players with at most 2 years of NBA experience under their belt. To win 20 more games and gel them together is amazing.
