Burres quiets Angels offense as Orioles cruise past Angels

BALTIMORE 6, LA ANGELS 3
BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Rookie Brian Burres could care less ifthe Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are the winningest team in themajors.

Burres tossed seven-plus solid innings and Ramon Hernandezhomered as the Baltimore Orioles posted a 6-3 victory over theAngels on Saturday.

The lefthander was pulled after a career-high 7 2/3 inningsafter allowing an RBI double to Vladimir Guerrero, yieldingthree runs and five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

"He knew going in what we were up against," Orioles interimmanager Dave Trembley said. "We needed a quality start. Wereally needed to max him out and we did."

In the past two games, Baltimore's bullpen was heavily taxed, and Trembley, who is 6-4 since taking over for Sam Perlozzo onJune 18, needed a good outing from his starter.

"To say the least, it was a big game for him and it was a biggame for our team," Trembley said.

Burres impressed the Angels both times they have seen him.

"We saw a lot of the same stuff," Angels manager Mike Sciosciasaid. "We didn't get many good looks at him."

Howie Kendrick, whose 12-game hitting streak was ended, shookhis head and smiled when talking about Burres. "We've beenhaving trouble with those soft-tossing pitchers," Kendrick said.

Hernandez, who has batted just .158 (3-for-19) since his returnfrom the disabled list on June 22, sent a pitch from Angelsreliever Hector Carrasco over the fence in right for a three-runblast, his first since June 2, which also came againstCarrasco, who has surrendered eight home runs in 38 1/3 inningsthis season.

Paul Shuey, who is seeing his first major league action since2003 this season, recorded the final four outs without incidentfor his first save since August 22, 2002, as a member of theDodgers.

"I was excited about it. That's the honest truth," Shuey said."I'm at the point right now, with the hip and everything else,I don't know how long it will last, so I'll take it when I canget it."

Kevin Millar had two RBI and scored twice for the Orioles, whosnapped a two-game skid.

Bartolo Colon (6-4), who has lost four of his last fivedecisions, took the loss as he surrendered three runs and eighthits over six frames with two walks and six strikeouts.

Chone Figgins, who finished June with a .461 batting average(53-for-115), hit an RBI triple and scored a run for the Angels, who have dropped four of their last five contests. He had 17multiple-hit games over the last month and his 53 hits in Juneestablished a new club record for hits in a single month.
