I don’t know why no one is taking about this, but because Baldwin is on only a 1 yr contract, we do not get his bird rights... if he blows up and has a big year, which looks like a good probability with how he has played in Vegas, the Blazers will not be able to resign him because there is no cap room Neil needs to give Baldwin a 2nd year NOW so we can retain his bird rights and go over the cap to keep him the following year
People have been talking about this in at least 4 other threads. He’s been great since we picked him up and he seems like a keeper for sure.
Im talking about the contract aspect and the fact the we won’t be able to keep him with his current 1 yr deal
It has been brought up in other posts. Hard to imagine NO isn't on top of this. I can't remember what his options are at this point though. Does he have to use any part of the remaining MLE? Or can he sign him to the league minimum?
He might be the perfect backcourt mate for Dame. Dumars was a decent PG, but played SG well next to Thomas.
Area they able to offer a 2 year deal after his current contract is garaunteed or do they have to void the current contract first?
I said it before, but I just have a feeling that CJ is on his way out. I can't imagine that our summer, after getting embarrassed in the first round, is going to consist of drafting a couple young kids and signing a few guards. Neil tried to get PG13 and Melo last summer. I have a feeling that he's looking to try to get Love and Kawhi this summer. Love might be attainable without giving up CJ, but Kawhi most definitely would not be.
Good question. Looking at what they have remaining in their MLE, they could offer him 2y/3.5M. I'd have no issue with that, personally. However, like I said in another thread, I think he probably knows he'll be worth more than that on the open market next year.
Well, has anyone come up with the definitive answer as to what Blazers have to do to have his Bird rights?
This is FALSE. Baldwin signed a 2-yr minimum contract during the '17-'18 season. Portland will have his EARLY bird rights at the end of the '18-'19 season. Portland will be able to re-sign him to slightly more than the MLE money (~$9M per year). At this point, there are no tools in the CBA toolbox for Neil to use on Baldwin that would improve the situation.
Two questions: 1) Can Portland extend him early or do they have to wait until the end of this coming season? 2) If Portland cannot extend him, then he is a UFA and another team could offer him more?
175% of prior year OR 105% of league average, whichever is higher. MLE is approximately league average salary.
Are we overreacting? I remember people thought Bazz was gonna get a decent contract..... and he's still a free agent. The market has been much tougher than people projected. Some of the signings have been startlingly low.
1) AFAIK, we'd need cap space or an exception available to us this season in order to extend him, so no extension available greater than the remaining amount of our MLE. 2) Yes, that is correct.
