Republican challenger pulls even with anti-Trump Democrat in solid-blue Oregon's governor's race: poll

If there's a "blue wave" coming in 2018, someone may have forgotten to tell Oregon's voters. A Republican challenger has pulled even with blue state Oregon's Democratic incumbent governor, according to a new poll.

The news comes as a surprise in a state that hasn’t seen a Republican governor since late 1980s, sparking fears of the end of Democratic Party’s total domination of the state.

The poll indicates that Republican state Rep. Knute Buehler is waging a serious challenge to Gov. Kate Brown, a vocal critic of President Trump, with both candidates getting support from 45 percent of likely voters, the Oregonian reported.

Oregon is considered a solid blue state, with Democrats controlling both the state House and Senate, while Brown has been the governor since 2015.

The poll, conducted by Florida-based Gravis Marketing, invigorated the race overnight, though Democrats began questioning its validity.

“It's hard to understand how this is a reputable piece of public opinion research,” Brown’s campaign spokesman, Christian Gaston, told the Oregonian.

"It's a bit surprising to see a Democratic statewide candidate in Oregon have such weak numbers, but (Brown) does."

    - John Horvick, DHM Research Vice President

But other pollsters in the state aren’t dismissing the poll showing the two candidates deadlocked in the race, saying Brown doesn’t have strong voter support.

“We've seen it pretty close, head-to-head, between Brown and Buehler,” John Horvick, vice president and political director of DHM Research in Portland, told the newspaper. "It's a bit surprising to see a Democratic statewide candidate in Oregon have such weak numbers, but (Brown) does.”

DHM Research’s previous poll in January indicated Brown was leading Buehler 46 percent to 29 percent.

The latest poll, showing Brown struggling against a Republican in a solid blue state, strikes at the core of Democrats’ messaging about the looming so-called “blue wave” in the upcoming midterm elections.

Buehler is running a campaign based strictly on statewide issues, avoiding any national politics distractions. His platform is moderate Republican, promising to “restore fiscal sanity” and not to impose new taxes, all while improving the state’s education system.

Brown, meanwhile, appears to stick to the Democratic Party’s efforts to gather support by pointing fingers at the White House in a bid to energize voters in a state where the overwhelming majority of voters supported Hillary Clinton for president in 2016.

Brown has since become a loud voice in national politics. She has repeatedly called out the Trump administration over issues of immigration and, more recently, criticized the selection of Judge Brett Kavanaugh as President Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court.

Would love to see some new blood in the governor's mansion, but it's not gonna happen.

Knute is running a great race.

Kate is not running a race at all.

For the dems not to run a challenger in the primary against her was a huge mistake. She didn't get the experience she needed to hold off a challenger.

Dems seem more fixated on trying to get Knute removed from the ballot instead of campaigning against him.

Knute is using a very simple strategy, get all of the republican votes and 1 out of 10 dem votes and he'll be governor.

His pro choice ad and that ad with the gay couple on foster care and adoption are very effective that will get some dems to vote for him.

Prediction: Knute will be the next governor.

(That is not an endorsement of Knute.)

Democrats have no idea how to play this game unfortunately. Cost them a presidential election, might cost them the next one too.

Whoever wins the next governorship in Oregon, will be whichever candidate Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington county deem their choice.

Don’t laugh. Buehler is for real. One of the reasons I am no longer a registered Democrat is Kate Brown (along with Ted “I Know Nothing” Kulongoski). She is a deeply corrupt party hack who continues to take Oregon down the rat hole by using national issues to distract Oregonians from her breathtaking ineptitude. I’m not saying we need a Republican in the State House but the Democrats haven’t done much of anything positive for this state in a long time. They blow money like drunken sailors and then continue to ask for more. Buehler is the best choice (regardless of party affiliation) Oregon has had since Bob Straub. Maybe that ain’t saying much but it works for me in the coming election......

I agree, this State needs some new thinking and blood. I don't care if its Dem, Repub,Libertarian, just no extreme lefties or righties. On blows up recruiting shops the other abortion clinics, both nuts and not needed to run our State. No hard core socialist that want total government control while people lose freedoms and eventually go hungry.
If we don't get our shit together here in this State there will be a civil war against radicalism.

at this point I just want better education and someone to clean up all the homeless tents. its absolutely pathetic that we just let people set up camps under every bridge and freeway and throw garbage everywhere. I sympathize with many of the homeless but that doesn't mean they can just live wherever they want and treat the place like shit. and that's exactly what they do.

I couldn't believe all of the tents on sidewalks I saw the last time I was up there a year and a half ago, and it looks so much worse in videos and pictures now. I see a few homeless people here and there here, and a lot more in Medford, but it's on a whole nother level in Portland.

Actually I agree. I also think the public pension adds run by Knute are going to be effective and a winning strategy. The dems have made attempts to fix this issue but its been blocked in every public vote. Im not sure what his plan on this issue but I dont think that will matter much.

I agree our education system has gone to shit. More cuts every year. More schools closed. Bigger class sizes. Etc etc... These kids are our future and we should treat that accordingly with far more importance than we do now.

As for the homeless this is one of Portland's and Oregons largest problems. It is an epidemic. I agree they shouldn't be dumping their garbage everywhere. I can't fault them for finding a spot and pitching a tent. A small percent have made the choice to live that way. Most homeless people would like to be sleeping in a house\apt rather than on the street. Theyhave fallen through the cracks. I have seen mayor after mayor and governor after governor promise to fix the problem, but none have done so. Shipping them away on greyhounds to other states doesn't fix the problem. A couple shelters doesn't fix the problem. There needs to be an expansive program to deal with this. Part of it is Oregon is one of the more expensive places to live. The rent is skyhigh. Minimum wage isn't enough to pay the rent, bills, food, etc. Inflation will stay ahead of wage and keep people treading water...some will drown.

My mom is out visiting from Portland. Every time she comes out she talks about how much worse things have gotten there. She's pretty much over it at this point and trying to get out of there. She's always voted Democratic and is currently so disgusted with democrats she may never vote for one again. I get the same sentiment from other friends and family members from there also. They've almost all moved away from Portland, if not completely out of the state. It's just not worth it anymore. The lawmakers there pander to the fringe left extreme and it's just pissing everyone off, especially other democrats who aren't as extreme.

I have great memories of going downtown when I was a youngster and even a young adult. I never ever had a concern about being harassed or bothered.
Now when I go there Im a bit nervous about what I may run into or what Ill get thrown in my face.
I actually got harassed not to long ago by a couple guys that I know were anarchist, as they whipped me shit about the T-shirt I had on, that said "Army Dad". I can take punks whipping me shit but I sensed they actually wanted to start a physical confrontation of which at nearly 70 I probably should try and avoid. This town is getting taken over by anarchist punks that want nothing more than start trouble and disrespect our country. These guys think they are empowered by the pulse of this City and the ultra progressive leaders.

...agreed...and part of the problem is that in many cases, the wrong people with the wrong credentials are teaching our kids. In many countries the top percentage of their college grads become teachers/instructors...not here, because here in the Shangri-La, anyone with a teaching certificate can become a teacher..."garbage in, garbage out".

...if we want better students, hire better teachers...and pay them for what they're worth.

I don’t know what it is with me but I lean to the left from a national perspective (trump sucks) but my own state I want a R governor to see what he or she can do. I want homeless addressed. It seems like we are afraid to hurt feelings. Clean it up. We pay enough taxes. But we don’t spend it right. Crack down on these protesters for fucks sake. Arrest them.
