Actually (at least as I remember it) Atiyeh (who was a very nice guy) led us into the recession. I went to work in Salem in 1985 and I remember thinking, “will the last person to leave please turn out the lights?” Atiyeh also bears a large share of the responsibility for some of the more egregious PERS issues we are dealing with today (though I am personally grateful for what PERS I do draw today, despite it significantly reduced via the “reforms” of the past 15 years). Atiyeh was a good person and a heckuva business man but not a particularly effective Governor. But then, neither were the line of Democrats who succeeded him......

I can’t help but get the feeling that you are “whistling past the graveyard”.........As @jonnyboy was alluding to, Trump didn’t “stand a chance in hell” and we all know how that turned out. Never say never. This former Democrat (now Independent) is chomping at the bit to vote for Buehler. Kate Brown is Hillary Lite.....and just as shitty of a choice.....

I don't know Oregon politics but there are no choices with a two party, self centered, party loyal, greedy, screw citizens, usual crap political system. It's a carbon through the country. I live in Jersey, land of this crap.

Pretty damn brave of you to admit in today's news cycle. As for me, I have shifted from far right to Independent after some serious review of the political disasters of the past 35 years.

Idk why anyone would want to be part of either party these days after the repeated shit shows.

I am, and always have been, an Independent. It kinda sucks because you can't vote in the D or R primary and it's almost always going to be a D or R winning the General. It would be nice to be able to influence the primaries, but just can't align myself with either the D's or the R's.

This is the exact loophole that keeps D's and R's in power. Most people arent politically interested enough to vote in primaries, so by the time the General rolls around, all you got left is one of these dickbags to vote for. The D's and R's get all their homeboys to show up for the primaries that nobody else participates in, and they basically clean up shop as far as votes are concerned. Game over. Election won by either a Dem or Repub (who are coincidentally funded by the same interests) every single time. There needs to be more emphasis on the importance of the primaries, but don't expect it from the media.

Agreed - the voters could change this. They choose not to, by not voting. I don't think it has to do with the media. Voters are simply happy to let someone else decide for them rather than go to the effort of voting.

I used to live in New Jersey. Awfully cold in the winter but the spring and summer were fabulous. Loved the board walk along the beach. I suppose the boardwalk is gone now due to the storms.

Edit: OMG, the pizza. Even 50 years later I still remember the fabulous pizza. And you could buy pizza by the slice in Manhattan and it was worth writing home about.

If you go to NW 23rd avenue, you can get great pizza from and very very informal restaurant called "Escape from New York". They have a small area reserved for eating right there or you can do what many customers do and get yours take-out style.

I would say whoever produces the most votes will produce the governor. Would you have it any other way?

Yes, Oregon should have an electoral college system to represent each county equally.

So, a vote in a sparsely populated county is more important than other votes?

Hey, it works really really well at the federal level, so why not? It would be fun having Oregon governed by say, one of the Hammonds, right?

That's not exactly how it works on the federal level.

Lanny Boardwalks are here and thriving. My wife and I bought her dream beach house last year in Seaside. What a deal ! A town house in a condo association for only 170. For all the food and beer I consume we walk it off on the board walk or at the bay. I'm here now doing this and listening to Dire Straits and the Ojays. Have a good weekend Bro Pizza or Tomato pie is supreme in NY/NJ!

Wait a minute, we've got a Seaside, Oregon. My brother used to live there. They've got a turnaround right next to the Beach that's supposed to be where Lewis and Clark arrived. Really comes alive in the Summer. Great place for Beach Volleyball. When I was a toddler they used to catch Dungeness crab in the surf, make a bon fire out of driftwood and place a giant pot on it, cook crab, and offer it to anyone walking by. That included me and my mother and father.

Beautiful beach. In near by Gearhart, just 3 miles North, you can get razor clams. Kind of a rich enclave at the beach. My parents lived in Gearhart until they passed away. I believe it's got the oldest golf course West of the Mississippi.
