I can shoot a buck off my deck without any gear....everday..hell I can walk within 4 ft of them...when I hunted as a youngster I'd sit on a hill upwind at 4am and wait for them to drink in the pond...take them easily without all this high tech gear.with a rifle or a bow..no trees, no blinds...just patience ..my father claimed that a deer drinking in the early morning has the sweetest meat...no adrenaline in the bloodstream
I stopped hunting after the war....in the 70s my hippy neighbors would bring me fresh deer roadkill for free all the time...they were mostly vegans and I knew how to dress a deer and tan the hide...I ate a lot of those deer but only if they were still warm and not messed up in the guts
If it's drinking vodka or rum, sure. But a tequila-morning-drinking deer is going to be bad news all the way around. barfo
Still have the .270 too. My old Captain of my ship bought it for me in the Navy exchange in Yokuska. A 1958 model 70 Winchester. When I left the ship, I left it there. Maybe 18 years later, he brought it too me. He was a retired Admiral then. He really did spend his own money on that weapon. It is a damn fine, very accurate long range weapon. Not necessarily the best all around hunting weapon but it will fill a role.
Ate a guinea pig once. I confess I didn't hunt it. They are a delicacy in Ecuador. I was with a group and no one would have one. So I said what the hell. Not a lot of meat. Taste like bacon and chicken
if you hunt in the ice and snow you'd better not slip with a handgun...harder to accidentally shoot oneself with a rifle than a handgun
I have no need to feed myself or family that way. Never did consider it a sport. I find no sport in hunting for food, nor any sport in killing the animals. The last was about 30 years ago and the kill made me feel bad. Thus the last.
I haven't hunted for food since probably 1970....and I agree....it's also a lot of work to butcher an animal or tan a hide...I have chickens now and go fishing
I used to have a trap line for coyote....once caught a possum in my trap...the thing just wouldn't die..put a lot of bullets in.it was a horrible experience.kept rising up and hissing at me....after that pulled up all my traps and never did that again.
