<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>New York (AP) - In what would be a first in the professional sports world, NBA commissioner David Stern is contemplating allowing MVP voters a chance to re-cast their votes in light of the horrific first round performance by likely MVP Dirk Nowitzki. "I have been getting numerous calls and emails, not only from fans but from voters as well, indicating they would like to vote again," Stern said in a prepared statement. "While it is not the NBA's practice to allow this type of situation, we will take the weekend to come up with a solution that appeases everyone." One solution might be waiting until the postseason is over for voters to make their choices. The Mavericks, who finished the regular season with the best record in the league at 67-15, were lead by Dirk Nowitzki. Fans, teammates and members of media assumed he was a lock to win the MVP, even though it is considered to be a tight race with Phoenix point guard Steve Nash. Then, he went 2-13 from the field in Thursday night's loss to Golden State, which cost the Mavericks their season. "I can't say I blame (the voters) for wanting a second vote," a dejected Nowitzki replied. "I played terribly and cost my team their season. But the award is about the regular season. That's when the voting is done (at the end of the regular season) and that's the way it is and should be." Mavericks owner Mark Cuban fumed, "They cannot take that award from Dirk if he is the winner. I will not allow Stern to do that."</div>if this is actually true, which I don't think it is, that would be weak on the NBA's part. Choking should not cost you the MVP award.
I agree, they have never re-voted and they shouldn't now just because of the playoff performance. :no3:
"I have been getting numerous calls and emails, not only from fans but from voters as well, indicating they would like to vote again," Stern said in a prepared statement. Ouch. Dirk Nowitzki is getting hammered...man... :no1:
I would feel ashamed if I was Dirk and won the MVP after this. It would basically mean nothing to him at this point. Its kinda almost mocking him.
that sucks. After having a great season and then a horrible performance in the playoffs sucks for him. And now fans want a revote. I dont think even Dirk would care if he won it now.
This is unfathomable. The NBA MVP award is something that is judged over a regular season. These sports writers are stupid, they know nothing other than stereotypical and blatant fact. The only reason these guys are recasting their vote is because those who voted for Nowitzki feel stupid - they're trying to cover up their lack of knowledge. Bill Simmons said it best,"The NBA would rather give votes to old guys who despise the league than give votes to young guys who are die-hards and live off the game"
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>"The NBA would rather give votes to old guys who despise the league than give votes to young guys who are die-hards and live off the game"</div>yeah, simmons has actually written like two good articles in the past week. I think that's a first for him.
Yeah, it would be pretty embarassing for Dirk and the NBA if they award him the MVP at haltime of a game that he's not playing in...I think this really changes alot. MVP's don't lose in the first round...It's as simple as that...If I had a vote...I would completely change my opinion, and vote for Nash.

Dirk could win MVP and retire before the playoffs started for all I care.<span style="font-size:36pt;line-height:100%">The MVP award is judged on regular season performance only</span>If Dirk takes a piss on the court during game 1, he should still win the MVP. It's criteria has nothing to do with playoffs, and the fact some people want to re-vote because of playoffs shows just how off-kilter the award voting is.
Yeah, I think that's dumb...The MVP award should not be given out to someone who loses in the first round...That's just my opinion...I don't care about the regular season...If you win all 82 games and then lose in the first round of the playoffs, how is that being the most valuable player in the League? MVP's lead their teams to the Finals, they don't choke in the 1st round.

The MVP is for the regular season not the playoffs, I don't think they will change their minds though.

But, I would have voted for Nash to win it despite this choke-job by Dirk. I felt Nash was the better choice for the MVP than Dirk was, but whatever...Anyway, I think that if Stern does change anything, he'd probably change the timeline for the voting. Maybe allow voting during the first round of the playoffs? I don't know, but I doubt he allows people to re-vote this year.
I really dont care if its about regular season. The fact that Dirk would recieve an award indicating him the best player in the league after the huge bust in the first round, it just wouldnt be right. I know thats not technically what it means, but basically it does, because if it really was "Most Valuable to there team", it would go to KG. Minny is nothing without him. Thats basically what people say when they stress that it is "Most Valuable to their team".

No one in their humanly right thinks Dirk is the best player in the NBA, but he fit the criteria, and even after this loss, fits the criteria.
It really really should mean he doesn't get MVP, but stupid assholes will still vote for him. IMO, Carlos Boozer, Nash and Baron Davis are the 3 top candidates.
