I don’t really care about that stuff.

That 10 man rotation in the beginning of the season. Once Terry cuts it down to 8/9

    Dame
    CJ
    Harkless
    Aminu
    Nurk

    Bench (ranked by minutes)

    1. Collins
    2. Turner
    3. Curry
    4. Baldwin or Trent

It's a shame there's questions about Jimmy's character. Trading CJ for him would be absolutely perfect.

I doubt it'll be at 10 to start. We'll be trying to win. There's not enough minutes for that.

    Agreed.

If I were Neil though, I'd want to be given some sort of indication that'd he'd be willing to re-sign if things went well before going through with it.

And I wouldn't give up Simons or Collins to do it.

It’s ten at the beginning of every season.

I think the top 8 on this roster is much clearer than on any of the previous four though.

Collins is going to be given every opportunity to play and I think the staff has more trust in what Curry can bring than they had in Bazz and Pat before last season.

Terry had a 9 man rotation in the meat of last season.

The bench seems pretty clear to me, at least initially.

    CJ
    Curry
    Turner
    Collins

Those are the locks. The fifth guy will Probably be matchup dependent. Meyers, Biggie, Layman, Stauskas, Baldwin the options. Maybe one of the rooks.

What I’m curious about is whether or not Terry tries out the second unit without CJ. If that happens I’d assume Stauskas would get first crack.

In that scenario, I'd go Layman if the shooting improvement is real. His size and and athleticism on D/transition would be more useful imo--especially is Hark or Aminu is out there with him. Gives that group some 3-4 switchability on D.

Stauskas is probably the safer pick though.

Yeah I’d rather give Layman a look than Stauskas, but I just know in my gut that Stauskas is going to get an opportunity.

    Not really.

We had a couple blowouts to start the season so that doesn't apply if we're talking about our rotation in tight games. And a 10th player playing less than 8min doesn't make it a "10 man rotation IMO", because most of the time those minutes are situational and n ot part of a regular rotation (ex. Playing Meyers against Cousins). If you look at the rotation in October to start last season, multiple games saw us only playing 9 players. Some saw a 10th guy getting very limited minutes. It wasn't a 10-man rotation.

There's not enough minutes to play a bench unit without Dame and CJ, try out Stauskas and Baldwin, as well as give Curry enough minutes. Curry can't play more than 12-14 minutes at guard if Dame and CJ sit at the same time. He's going to get more than that, as he should. They'll try out Baldwin (and maybe Stauskas), but I'm all but certain they'll stagger Dame and CJ.

Portland had ten players average at least 16 minutes a game last year. And that’s for the whole season.

You realize that if two players play in 41 games each and average 16mpg, they might only be playing in games the others aren't? You can have 10 players average 16mpg while only playing a 9-man rotation. Not everyone played 82 games.

You even admitted that we had a 9-man rotation midseason. But I showed box scores that show us as having a 9-man rotation at the begginning of the season, too. Did you look at them?

That’s a pretty immature response to a quality post.

Yeah that’s called an nba season. Players get hurt. Players get benched. Coaches expirement. It happened last season and it’ll happen this season. Never claimed we’ll have a ten man rotation the whole season so I don’t get your point.

I count ten players Terry relied on to carry Portland through the season. Don’t see why that would change this year, especially when he has more options.

Maybe we have different definitions of what a "10-man rotation" is?

My whole point was that, in my opinion, we didn't have a 10-man rotation to start the season like some people claim. I went through to box scores to see if these people were right or not. Obviously, it depends on definition, because there were times where we would situationally play a 10th man 3-7 minutes in a game because of non-regular circumstances (foul trouble, playing against Cousins, a blowout, etc.), but that doesn't count as being a part of a regular rotation to me. In many games to start the season, we only had 9 players play, and I was providing box scores from the start of the season as evidence. If we had a 10-man rotation, I'd expect 10 people to play every game to start the season regardless of circumstance, but again, that's just based on my definition of a "10-man rotation".

This makes me think that we'll have a regular 9-man rotation at most (A bench of Curry, Turner, Collins, and another big (Meyers?)). I could even see us going with a regular 8-man rotation then playing a 9th player situationally depending on the matchup. I've had a lot of people say I'm wrong and that we usually start the season with a 10-man rotation, so I was providing box scores as a counterpoint.

I'm not saying we won't rely on 10 people, because injuries happen and guys steal minutes. I just define a "rotation" on the minutes specific players are playing over a current stretch of multiple games, and 10 players weren't consistently playing at the same time during the same stretch of games.

We also didn't have a steady backup G like Curry, as Pat and Napier were bench-warmers the season before. We also had two rookie bigs who were battling for minutes, and now that one of them has won (Collins), I don't expect variation there throughout the season. I think our lineup is more set than last years and we'll see less experimentation and a maximum of 9 players playing regular minutes. That's my whole point.

It's a shame Jimmy's character is questionable. Ever since he got a jumper his ego went through the roof.
