I didn’t mention anything about his contract? That’s on Olshey.

But the rest? That’s on Meyers. He’s had more opportunities than anybody else to establish himself and still can’t get off the bench. So what if we laugh at him? We’re laughing at his game, nothing personal.

None of this is news. It's been beaten to death for the last 6 years. I won't even disagree with you or try to argue There's no point.

And, that brings me back to my first post in this thread...

Last night at the team was pulling away en route to their third straight win, to go 6-2 for the young season, in a game where the bench contributed 50 points and Meyers Leonard didn't play, not even during garbage time, the OP decided, hmmm nothing else to bitch about tonight, I think I'll start another Meyers Leonard bashing thread so all the other haters can pile on.

Why the fuck can't we just enjoy this team? Why do we always need to find something negative to post about no matter how well things are going? The usual targets are the GM and the coach, but the GM built us a great bench that has been key to our early season success and the coach has figured out how to use that bench and make Evan Turner useful. He's even done a good job with his substitutions, refusing to go small against HOU and punishing fuck out of them with Nurk. Combine that with Turner playing well and we NEED something to bitch about.

Wait, I know MEYERS!!! That's an easy one. Never mind that he didn't play last night, barely plays at all and hasn't hurt the team when he has played. Doesn't matter. Just start a thread and the Meyers haters will pile on the exact same arguments we've all been hearing for YEARS.

I'm not even defending Meyers here. For fuck sake, he's our 3rd string center. How many threads do we need about him?

The real reason I posted in this thread, is the pervasive negativity that runs through this forum. Even when things are going well, we NEED to have something to bitch about. Even if it's the same old easy target, who didn't even play last night.

And yes, I get that I'm bitching about the bitching. I just get tried of all the unnecessary negativity around here sometimes.

No he doesn't. Not even close.

Timofey Mozgov is making $16 million this year. He is averaging 4 ppg and 3 rebounds in 11.6 minutes per game.

Allen Crabbe is making $18.5 million this year. He is averaging 7.3 ppg on 26% shooting in 22 minutes per game.

    There are SIGNIFICANTLY worse contracts.

It is weird though, in college he blocked two shots a game as a soph. People expected him to become a good shotblocker in the pros.

Part of being a fan is discussing what you don't like about a team. If some posters want to rip on a player and create a thread about it that is their choice. If you dont like it stay in other happy go lucky threads, spread your positivity and rainbows over there. You don't have to read or post in every thread.

And I'd wager neither of these guys get shit on by their fans as much as Meyers does by Blazers fans.

Really???? Wow, thank you so much for your wise insights. I've only been participating in online forums since the mid-1980s and no one ever told me I didn't have to participate in every thread. This will surely be life changing for me. Thank you so much for your sage wisdom and concern for mental well being. You have truly done me a service.

    Have a nice day!

That’s because shitty players don’t usually stick around a team for 8 years.

Sighting last night against the Pels! Meyers got blocked from playing by Stotts who went with Swanigan instead.

Ultimately Meyers is responsible for Meyers, but I have mentioned this before. I think any shot blocking ability Meyers once had has been coached out of him. In addition to leading the Big 10, a pretty fucking major college conference, in blocked shots as a sophomore, Meyers also blocked 38 shots, in limited minutes, his rookie year. That's not exactly Mutombo-like, but it's also a LOT more than ZERO. The three players who blocked more shots (Aldridge, Batum and Hickson) all played 2x as many minutes. Meyers Leonard actually did not suck at blocking shots his rookie year.

After his rookie year, the coaches worked with him to go straight up, not swing at the ball or try to block shots. The idea was to avoid excessive fouls trying to block shots. The whole vertical thing. That worked great for Joel Freeland, but it's not like Meyers was foul prone as a rookie. He averaged 5.0 PF/36 to go with those 38 BLKs as a 20-year old rookie. Last year, as a 25-year old player in his sixth NBA season, he averaged 5.1 PF/36 to go with ZERO BLKs. What did we gain here?

Again Meyers is responsible for Meyers, but he was NOT Joel Freeland. He was 7'1" and could run and jump - and block shots. Encouraging him to not even try to block shots contributed to the fact that he no longer blocks shots. I can't help but think the two are related.

    Yup.

I think Jim Moran is a good assistant coach, in general. I think he may even someday be an NBA head coach. But, I don't think he's doping a great job coaching up our big men. And I'm not just talking about Meyers...

Yup. The Blazers have been mismanaging big men ever since Tim Grgurich left the team. It concerns me for the future of Nurk and Collins.

Meyers is awesome! Not as a basketball player, no. But as a teammate, I love the guy.
I can't remember who it was, but I wanna say it was Jake who went down under the hoop after being fouled and Meyers jumped off the bench and was the first out there to help him off the floor. He never pouts and it's always supportive of his teammates - even the ones taking minutes that may have been his under different circumstances. Meyers is a great dude, and I'd be fine to retain him as our 3rd string C on a vet minimum contract.

i know we slam on meyers a lot, but he's honestly the most mismanaged, delusional but athletically gifted 7 footer we've ever had.

again, if we had a big man coach of any fuckin ability what so ever, he could be a completely serviceable player - but whoever told him to sag on every play, chill on the edges, hit a 3 every other game etc needs to be shot.

as ive said, he needs to be locked in a cave with Karl Malone, Dennis Rodman, Alonzo Mourning, David Robinson and the Dream for like a year and they can completely reboot him.

I know I specifically shit on meyers a ton, but most of it is frustration about his inability to use his most obvious assets. he's big, strong, fast, athletic, hops, can shoot etc but is a complete wallflower on the court.

If i had all those assets, i'd be like "right mahfuckers, im going in...." every time, muscle people, block out, dominate boards, alley oops, arrrrrrrrrgh its just so bewildering....

This staff does a GREAT job developing guards, but the steadfast refusal to hire a proven big man coach drives me nuts. I'm not claiming they would have ever been all stars, but both Meyers and Noah Vonleh were lottery picks that we pissed away. They both could have been better than they are. Maybe not great, or even good, but better.

Collins has great instincts and has been well coached at lower levels. So, hopefully he has a chance. Nurk for all he does well, still has some significant weaknesses in his game. Swanigan is a great rebounder with a good nose for the ball, but that's a skill he brought with him, not one he's been taught by our staff. Fuck even decent players like Ed Davis and Mason Plumlee never developed offensively during their time here. They both left POR as the same players they were when they arrived.
