PORTLAND, Ore. — At least six groups are planning to come to downtown Portland on Tuesday night for political demonstrations, according to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler. Wheeler tweeted that the Portland Police Bureau has reached out to the groups to "have a conversation" but the groups have not yet responded. None of the groups have applied for a permit with the city, according to Wheeler. "We want everyone to have a safe and fun election night," Wheeler tweeted. "We want everyone to be able to safely exercise their first amendment rights. But know the laws. You cannot block streets, freeways or public transportation. And most importantly — violence will not be tolerated." Occupy ICE PDX has announced a protest against Measure 105 and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at City Hall at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The protest organizers said they plan to march. "[We will] listen to our speakers, march through the streets, touring everyday building and corporations that do daily work with ICE, and [demand] justice for Portland's immigrant community," the group said. Occupy ICE PDX responded to Wheeler's tweets on Tuesday afternoon with a statement on their Facebook page. The statement read: "Portland, we want to have a safe and fun election night. We want to be able to safely exercise our 1st amendment rights. But know the laws: Don't talk to cops, and these are our streets. And most importantly - injustice will not be tolerated. Here's what you need to know about the demonstrations tonight. We are coming to downtown Portland to rally against white supremacy, racial profiling and measure 105. We need to strengthen our community and create a real sanctuary city and state. Portland police "reached out" as posted prior, attempting a "conversation" that conveniently excluded "difficult" topics such as their use of flash grenades and hiding weapon caches. Responses were offered but no one agreed to corroborate with cops." On election night in 2016, protesters unhappy with the election of Donald Trump protested in downtown Portland. Those protests started at around 11 p.m. and ended at about 4:30 a.m. Protesters that night shut down lanes of Interstate 5 and other streets in Portland, and a protester was struck by a car and suffered minor injuries. There were also reports of vandalism, including a dumpster fire.
