Former WBC super middleweight champ Markus Beyer has passed away at the age of 47 at a hospital in Berlin after what German media describes as a short time of serious illness. Beyer turned pro in 1996 after a long and successful amateur career promoted by Sauerland Event and trained by Ulli Wegner. He was moved fast and won the WBC title in 1999 with a points win over Richie Woodhall. However, in 2000 Beyer seemed on his way to a win over a solid opponent in Glenn Catley when he gradually fell apart and was stopped and it was as if he was never able to get back to 100% after that. He did regain the WBC title with a split decision over Eric Lucas and then came the controversial DQ win ove Danny Green and a split decision loss to Cristian Sanavia - a man he later beat and beat Danny Green a second time as well and held on to the title until getting knocked out by Mikkel Kessler in 2006.
