Markus Howard scores 53 as No. 21 Marquette tops Creighton

Already one of the nation's most prolific scorers, Markus Howard outdid himself.

Marquette's junior guard made shots when he was wide open, shots when he had a hand in his face, shots while he was falling away, shots in heavy traffic in the lane.

When he was finished Wednesday night, Howard had scored a Big East-record 53 points, with 14 coming in overtime as the No. 21 Golden Eagles beat Creighton 106-104.

With Ponds out, No. 24 St. John's loses 79-71 to DePaul

With star guard Shamorie Ponds watching from the sideline for No. 24 St. John's, it was DePaul forward Femi Olujobi who turned Carnesecca Arena into his house for one night.

Olujobi had a season-high 27 points and eight rebounds in a fantastic New York homecoming, and DePaul beat the short-handed Red Storm 79-71 on Saturday for its first win over a ranked team in almost three years.

Howard's 26 help No. 21 Marquette hold off Seton Hall 70-66

Markus Howard got his points, and unheralded Theo John did just about everything else Marquette needed.

Howard scored 26 points, John had a double-double that included three crucial free throws down the stretch and the 21st-ranked Golden Eagles staved off a second-half rally to beat Seton Hall 70-66 on Saturday.

No. 15 Marquette survives Georgetown despite Howard's injury

Earlier in the season Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski claimed that 6-foot-8 junior Sam Hauser didn't really have a position. On Tuesday he got to test his theory out on the road in Big East play.

Hauser had a career-high 31 points and eight rebounds to go along with being the primary ball hander as No. 15 Marquette earned a 74-71 last minute victory over Georgetown as Markus Howard -- the nation's fourth leading scorer at 25.8 points per game -- played just three scoreless minutes due to lower back tightness.

No. 18 Villanova pulls away at Butler for 7th straight win

Eric Paschall and Phil Booth have No. 18 Villanova rounding into form.

They are knocking down 3-pointers, getting teammates more involved and, of course, continuing to excel on defense. If the defending national champs keep playing this well, they just might make another deep NCAA Tournament run.

Paschall scored 23 points, Booth added 17 and the Wildcats made 12 3s on Tuesday in an 80-72 victory at Butler.

Howard scores 23 as No. 12 Marquette holds off DePaul 79-69

Markus Howard scored 13 of his 23 points in the final six minutes and Sam Hauser added 19 as 12th-ranked Marquette held off DePaul 79-69 on Wednesday night to remain unbeaten at home.

DePaul, which trailed by 14 in the first half, pulled to 56-52 on Max Strus' layup with 7:31 remaining. Hauser appeared to counter with a 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down, but it was waved off after review.

No. 18 Villanova hits 17 3s, routs Seton Hall 80-52

Villanova hit the bottom in early December. The Wildcats had dropped four games -- as many as they had lost each of the last two seasons -- and they were confronted with troubling questions.

Coach Jay Wright was stumped as the Wildcats tumbled out of the Top 25.

"This is the reality," he said of the early season malaise. "How long is this going to take?"

    Not long at all.

Phil Booth and Eric Paschall turned into a two-person show for the No. 18 Wildcats, powering the team out of its early funk. Booth and Paschall combined to outscore Seton Hall in the first half and the Wildcats thumped the Pirates 80-52 on Sunday for their eighth consecutive victory.

Howard's 32 points lead No. 10 Marquette past Butler 76-58

Markus Howard impressed Butler with his uncanny ability to make contested shots Wednesday night.

The high-scoring junior was more thrilled to see the way his teammates played defense.

While Howard delivered the scoring punch No. 10 Marquette needed in a rare 76-58 victory at Butler, the Golden Eagles scrambled around and shut down the Bulldogs' shooters.

Paschall, Booth lead No. 14 Villanova over DePaul, 86-74

Villanova is making shots, piling up wins and looking more like the team that won the NCAA championship for the second time in three years last season.

DePaul coach Dave Leitao didn't see that when the two teams played a few weeks ago. He noticed the difference on Wednesday night.

Eric Paschall scored 20 points, Phil Booth added 19 points and eight assists, and the 14th-ranked Wildcats beat the Blue Demons 86-74 for their ninth consecutive victory.

Gillespie's career game carries No. 14 Villanova past Hoyas

Villanova had reminders everywhere of how just successful it's been in recent seasons: two national championship trophies were displayed for photo ops and former great Jalen Brunson was honored in a pregame ceremony.

Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels gave the Wildcats a glimpse of just how great the future could be for the program.

Gillespie hit six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 30 points, Samuels had 16 rebounds and Eric Paschall had 24 points to keep No. 14 Villanova unbeaten in the Big East with a 77-65 victory over Georgetown on Sunday.

Ponds lifts St. John's past No. 10 Marquette 70-69

After No. 10 Marquette erased a 15-point deficit, St. John's had the ball in the right spot in the closing seconds -- Shamorie Ponds' hands.

Ponds scored 28 points, including a go-ahead layup with 16 seconds left, to give St. John's a 70-69 victory over the Golden Eagles on Tuesday night.

Howard scores 36 as No. 10 Marquette beats DePaul 92-73

Markus Howard scored almost at will. Sam Hauser and Sacar Anim also made a couple of key plays, and Ed Morrow delivered a solid performance in his hometown.

It was another nice night for No. 10 Marquette up until Hauser was poked in his right eye in the second half of Tuesday's 92-73 victory over DePaul, sidelining the valuable swingman for the rest of the game.

Paschall, Booth lead No. 13 Villanova past Providence, 85-67

By the time Eric Paschall and Phil Booth exited the game in the final minutes, some fans had already left the arena since the result was no longer in question. Those that remained made sure to give the two fifth-year seniors a hearty ovation.

Paschall scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half and No. 13 Villanova rebounded from its first Big East loss by running away from Providence 85-67 on Wednesday night.

St. John's rallies from 14-point deficit to stun No. 13 Villanova

A 70-foot shot just before halftime gave St. John's momentum, and LJ Figueroa and the Red Storm used a strong defensive effort in the second half to surprise No. 13 Villanova.

Figueroa scored 22 points and St. John's rallied to beat the Wildcats 71-65 on Sunday night. It was the first win for the Red Storm at Madison Square Garden against Villanova in 17 years, and they accomplished the feat in front of an energetic sellout crowd of nearly 20,000 fans.
