I am playing football this season for the first time since 8th grade and I am going to be a senior. It should be fun. Our league and our team aren't very good, so it isn't like not playing until my senior year is that big a deal. Our ex-coach got fired late winter after he was given a contract extension of one year. He was fired because of politics. He started a sophmore QB over a senior QB and the senior QB (who sucks) got mad and quit. So did his friend. Both of their dads are on the school board and they got our coach fired. They said, "It was because of wins and losses" but without going into a lot of detail, everyone knows it wasn't.They hired a new coach from Florida that is coming June 4th. He hasn't been a head coach before, but he was an assistant and his team only won three games. We had a meeting with him during school a while ago and he gave us his "football bible." 15 pages of his ideal football program. He seems like he is going to give us hell. If you miss weight lifting or practice for any reason at all (mom dies, your sick, work, doesn't matter) you have to run an 8x8x8 after the next practice. You will not play in the next game until you complete however many 8x8x8s you have left. Completeing an 8x8x8 is done like this:* You must run 8, 100 yard "sprints" on the field. Whenever the coach blows the whistle, you must do an up-down.* Then you have to run 8 laps on the track. This is 2-miles.* Then you have to run up and down each stair case in both the Home bleachers and the Vistor bleachers. This is one stadium, you must do it 8 times. All of this must be completed in under 30 minutes- after practice. This is for an "excused" missed practice. Which means you told the coach and he said it was okay. If you don't tell the coach you are going to miss a practice, and that happens three times, no matter who you are you get kicked off the team. The thing that pisses everyone off about this is he didn't come until about March. People already setup vacation plans and other stuff for the summer. So some people already have up to ten 8x8x8s they have to run this summer. One of my friends won't be here for football camp (he has plane tickets that he can't refund for a vacation he had already planned) and the coach may not let him play. Another kid at my school has to go to basic training for the National Guard and the coach may not let him play because he will be gone a lot of the summer- both these guys will be seniors. He seems like a dick. I hope some of this stuff is just "scare tatics" but who knows. We have to wear plain black shorts and plain white t-shirts in the weight room because we haven't "earned" the right to wear the Elida (our school) logo. That is fine with me because I honestly haven't. This is my first year playing in high-school, but him saying this really pissed off some about to be seniors. This is just some of the stuff in his "football bible." He has only lost 5 games as a player in his whole life he said, but one player doesn't win games, and as an assistant coach he went 3-8. True he was only an assistant, but still. I was wondering how bad some of your basketball and football coaches are.

Must be a Florida thing, we had a coach that tried to make summer Weight-lifting mandatory also, and we had alot of people that planned summer vacations. In out school system though, official football practices did not start until about 2 weeks before school started. So he was not allowed to make summer weight-lifting, and practices mandatory. I would suggest you get a group of the players and parents together, and you bring this to the attention of the school board. The only problem, is after being told that, he really did turn into a dick on the football field. He used us not working out with him over the summer, as the reason why he had to push us twice as hard during the practices to be in shape for the games. We was always having to do sprints, during times that most coach's would be going over plays or drills. As a result we was little prepared on the actual football side of things for the season, and only won like 4 games, he got fired.

I really don't understand the point of that. My basketball coach was the same way last year.We ran for about 2/3 of the practice. We barely did anything basketball related. We ended up sucking winning only 3 games. Sports aren't supposed to be a bootcamp. I signed up for basketball to play basketball, not run. If I wanted to run, I'd do track.

I'm all for "Coach Carter" practices, but that's just ridiculous. :P

You could be in another coach-bonds-with-players moves, that are based on tree events!Has anyone done the throw up test? You have to run until you throw up to show that you're trying really hard.

He came in that first day at our school dressed in an Elida football pollo shirt and told the kids (as the new guy and a first ever head coach) that were about to be seniors, playing their sixth year in the school (counting 7th and 8th grade) that they hadn't earned the right to wear the logo yet. I mean, we suck yes, but still, these guys have been giving it all for that team. How bad do we suck? Our fans get just as excited when we score a touchdown as other fans do when their team wins.<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Has anyone done the throw up test? I never have done it, this would have been my first time.

It may seem like a pain in the ass right now, but it'll be worth it. I had a basketball coach like that in high school, and I thought he was a dick too, but as time went on I started to appreciate all that stuff he did... but maybe that's just me.The difference is that my coach had been their for years, and this guy is new. He's probably just trying to establish a "winning attitude/atmosphere," and if most of the players feel like you do, he's not going to achieve that goal because he apparently is going about it the wrong way.
