Who is gonna fire Neil if he doesn’t do shit this year? They aren’t gonna hire a new gm until new ownership is in place imo.

If we traded Leonard, Vonleh, and a 1st for Mirotic that trade would've cut almost $1 million off our tax number. We could've still then paid someone to take an end of the bench guy to get under the tax but since the other trade saved us a $1 million it wouldn't have had to have been Vonleh or Napier like it was. Even if we didn't get under the tax the repeater penalties don't go into effect until 4 seasons down the road if you were above 3 of the previous 4 years.

Maybe Neil will step up and fuck this AD to LA trade up. I could see him pulling a fast one over on LA and sending them Dame for all the shitty pieces they wanna get AD for.

Yes I’m joking and Kuzma isn’t shitty.

Not sure where your trade scenario came from, but this is what I responded to from you.

Using the trade exception only adds to our salary so we would be significantly over the luxury tax and his contract would be on the books again this year pushing us further into the tax. I am aware of when the luxury repeater tax kicks in, but acquiring Mirotic would have put us over the tax last year and this year, thus getting closer to being a repeater right?

Oh sorry, I was just discussing this in another thread and we weren't talking about the Trade Exception. Obviously the goal was to cut salary last year but Olshey did admit during the summer that he wished he wasn't so conservative at the deadline. I believe he was talking about Mirotic and had they known they were going to be the 3rd seed they probably wouldn't have minded paying the tax if it helped them in the playoffs.

Well, we’re about to find out how true that statement was. He doesn’t have the luxury of hiding behind that this year.

Okay, but as you know, speculation doesn't hold a lot of water as all we can deal with is the facts as we know them and if we're going to speculate. I don't see Allen approving going that far into the tax last year and this year, especially considering we moved Vonleh to get under the tax. Was Mirotic available? sure. Could we have made a better offer to the Bulls? sure. Would it have cost the team a lot of money and put us into the luxury tax for 2 years running? yes. Now if we could have moved some salary that matched, then that would be more of a possibility.

What I'm saying is I think Olshey (and why would he say this without Allen feeling the same way) after the fact wished they wouldn't have cared about the tax last year and made it work getting Mirotic.

look at what the Bulls received. They got Omer Asik, Tony Allen, Jameer, and the 22nd pick. Portland could have offered their own 1st + Aminu + Vonleh + Napier/Pat/Swanigan, not been a taxpayer, and actually given the Bulls quite a bit better deal than they got from N.O. Their tax this year would be higher right now, but at least Portland would have reshuffled a deck that needed reshuffling

yeah, I know..."but Aminu!!...no!!". Of course, that would have required a GM who was not risk averse, and did not overrate the value of his own assets

Or he painted himself in a corner with the contracts he gave out and the best option was to wait them out. Sucks to be stuck in neutral but it is what it is.

Some days, I wish I had Olshey's job. He has lowered expectations to the point that if he makes any minor, remotely positive move he will be hailed as a hero. If he does nothing - to many fans that's OK because nothing is ever his fault.

I really disagree with that argument. Not even a player like Davis attracts bids from all 29 teams. In the Davis case, there may be 5 or 6 serious bids. With most players it is even less.

    Yeah
I meant that most of the gm’s struggle with much the same when it comes to assembling a team.
Your right that only a few teams are usually in the running for mega stars.
I guess the only thing that can seperate all these mediocre teams is how they compete and their records.

:dunno: We could also talk about post-season performance or payroll management - but I suspect it would accomplish nothing. My bottom line is pretty simple: if Olshey has no ability to change anything and no responsibility when something goes wrong, why is he making that large salary?
