Re: Jim O'Brien is the new head coach of the Pacers http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/bask...oach/index.html <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Larry Bird is going to back to his Celtics connections to find his next head coach. The Pacers have hired former Boston coach Jim O'Brien as their new coach, according to an NBA source with knowledge of the decision. The team has scheduled a 5 p.m. EDT news conference to announce the move. O'Brien, 55, has sat out the past two NBA seasons after being let go by the Sixers after the 2004-05 campaign. Before that he coached the Celtics for four seasons, guiding them to a 139-119 record (.539) and back-to-back playoff appearances in 2002 and '03. O'Brien, who replaces Rick Carlisle, was not among the names mentioned early in the Indiana hiring process. Sam Mitchell was considered the first choice, but the Raptors' coach decided to re-sign in Toronto. Former Heat coach Stan Van Gundy, Bulls assistant Jim Boylan, Pacers assistant Chuck Person and Lakers assistant Brian Shaw also were considered. However, the Pacers were said to be seeking a veteran coach who would hold players accountable. O'Brien, with extensive experience, appears to fit the bill. Attempts to reach O'Brien and his agent, Lonnie Cooper, were not successful. A Pacers spokesman would not comment.</div> I remember Obie... some good, some bad. The good is that he's an excellent defensive teacher who stresses it on a regular basis. The bad thing is that he will let 3's fly like crazy. He can be somewhat of a tough ass at times, but he does push his players. This was a decent decision, I think.
Re: Jim O'Brien is the new head coach of the Pacers You can do a lot worse than Jim O'Brien. Just ask any Celtics fan. It's nice to see him get another chance after he got completely screwed by Ainge and by the 76ers.
Re: Jim O'Brien is the new head coach of the Pacers I would've rather had Brian Shaw, but he's ok, but he's not gonna be popular at first
Re: Jim O'Brien is the new head coach of the Pacers Brian Shaw? I think you mean Brian Hill. O'Brien can be both good and bad. He does love the 3-ball but like CB32 he creates great defensive schemes and can be an extremely effective coach. He's going to start off with an absolute mess of a team in Indiana though.

Milwaukee Bucks general manager Larry Harris also confirmed he has given the Pacers permission to speak with assistant coach Lester Conner. Harter, Vogel and Conner coached with O'Brien in Boston and Philadelphia. Dan Burke, who joined the Pacers as an assistant in 1997, will be retained. O'Brien left open the possibility of adding another assistant.</div> Dick Harter is outstanding. He's an unbelievable defensive coach. I also met him 3 times and got his autograph, he's such a nice guy and his knowledge for the game is great. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (WELCOMEtotheJUNGLE @ Jun 1 2007, 08:17 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>Brian Shaw? Also... just for laughs, for us Celtic fans: <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>O'Brien, who will have input on offseason acquisitions, said the Pacers have the ability to be a better 3-point shooting team than last season, when they shot 35 percent. "It's a matter of commitment to style of play," he said. "I like to shoot the 3. I like to shoot good 3s when you have a presence in the low post like Jermaine O'Neal. He needs a lot of attention. If he's one-on-one down there, it's better than having people who can run off non-shooters to get to him and clog him up."</div> Ahh the good old days...

Re: Jim O'Brien is the new head coach of the Pacers I hate Jim O'Brien, he really sucked at being the Sixers head coach and that's just not my opinion on what he did in philly .. meh, good luck to him. mabye he will do well with the pacers, who knows.
