http://youtube.com/watch?v=qopfUzvGgMoYou could say that Amare even though he took only half a step at most towards the altercation, he was going towards Nash the whole time. I think he was standing up already because he was going to check in and then went closer to Nash and then didn't even take a full step towards the altercation before being pulled back by either Weber or Iavaroni. But Diaw was behind Amare and was heading back when the altercation began. He should not have been suspended at least. All they were doing was checking on their teammate, just like Duncan was after the accidental undercut. They in no way added to the altercation or were even close to joining in and that does not deserve a suspension.I'm saying the rule should stay, but something like this should not affect a series like this and rob the better team, or rob the fans of a better series if you do not think they were the better team. This series was amazing in the first 4 games, but this suspension ruined it. I think it's a good rule to keep, but the wording needs to be changed. Just because the rule has been around for a while and screwed other teams does not mean it can't be fixed.

The rule is there to make sure nobody leaves the bench and escalates a problem beyond control. The NBA has enough embarrassing marks already (like the Pacers' brawl), and they want to make sure it's crystal clear that actions like that are out of bounds. If you try to make it a judgment call (e.g. if they think the player was heading towards/abetting the problem), it will only lead to more controversy, as popular teams and players inevitably get the benefit of the doubt, and unpopular ones get the shaft. That would be the perception.I think the players should probably just stay on the bench.

Not a judgement call. This call is already causing controversy. I mean, no matter what, make it so that if someone from the bench takes a step on the floor during the game OR only suspend someone if they add to the altercation(not people who aren't even close), OR just make the punishment a flagrant foul. That gets you closer to a suspension but then also doesn't give away the series like that.
