The Official Around the NBA: March 2019 edition

With all of the CJ talk I looked into a couple stats. @Chris Craig in a game thread asked about a CJ over a certain number of assists correlates with wins. I looked into this, the Blazers are 14-10 when CJ has 4+ assists. Nothing too special there.

Interesting and not surprising stat though is when CJ has 15 or less FG attempts the Blazers are 16-6. #winning

 

sure...just a fyi, I brought in SF's because you mentioned wings, and what you like in wings, and the SG & SF positions are so similar, there's little distinction. I think PG's are a valid comparison too because they, like wings, are perimeter players who basically shoot from the same range, usually while carrying the burden of running an offense.

I wonder, in those games when CJ has fewer FGA's, if Nurkic has more

 

So Nurk averages 11.1 FGA /game. In the games CJ has 15 or less FGA, Nurk averages 10.9 FGA, so no real change.

 

If you're going to look at CJ's FGA relative to winning percentage, you also need to look at minutes played and margin of victory to rule out him simply carrying a heavier load when teammates aren't playing well.

 

Houston will be the number 2 seed. Utah takes 3rd and Blazers 4th Denver and OKC battles 5th place (either one is a bad match up for the Blazers)

Not going to look it up, but I would venture a guess that many of those wins were when the Blazers had a decent lead and others were shooting well. As we know and observed, our role players can disappear at times and Lillard and McCollum are required to carry a much bigger load. It would be interesting to look at minutes played in those games of 15 or less fg attempts.

 

Why did Chriss get ejected?

 

For throwing punches. Automatic ejection just like leaving the bench.

 

Maybe it was just the angle but the video I saw only showed Ibaka choking him and throwing a punch. Chriss looked like he was just defending himself.

Edit: Okay, saw a more clear video but I still think it's more just instinct to defend yourself if someone attacks you like that. Ibaka should get suspended for that.

 

Chriss had EVERY right to defend himself. He was attacked from behind!

 

All depends on how you look at it. Is stepping a foot on to the floor more worthy of a suspension or is retaliating more worthy? I would say retaliation and the fact that he was throwing punches made it more likely why he was suspended. If he had maybe just done a bear hug to keep from getting punched it may not of happened, but I have a feeling the only way out is to retreat as that's what they are instructed to do.

In a street fight, sure, but players are instructed to not engage if even trying to defend yourself and are instructed to retreat. Just like players are instructed not to leave the bench. Tough to adhere to, but with those rules they hope to limit the possibility of things really escalating to much worse.

 

I think Ibaka will be penalized more for his actions. he instigated this big time. Chriss actually had his back to him and was walking away.

 

Oh, i agree Ibaka will be punished much more or at least should be. Chriss might get off with just this game and possibly one more.
