My argument would be that what we listened to as kids, seems to stick with us, even if it's just genre's. We tend to determine what we "like" fairly early in life. So sure as I get older I will find new music I will like but the chances of it being similar to something I already like are much higher than the chance I'm going to decide I like hip-hop or something. My taste in music is strange... For an anniversary gift were heading to Seattle to see this. I love classical music. As a teen, I listened to classical music, and sometimes teenage angst stuff, but as an adult not really. Anyways, I'd venture to guess that the "new" music you like is similar in style/substance to music that you already liked, just like how I generally know the type of music I'm more apt to like too.
There is plenty of old music I can't stand....that's not why I like or dislike music...every era has it's clinkers...as a student of music I learned classical and jazz at a young age but still liked rock and roll....in the 70s I was a music snob...thought only jazz and classical music had substance....then I rediscovered blues, folk, soul and rock music...I've played pop music for money that I really disliked..it was the job...I remember how boring playing Still haven't found what I'm looking for by U2.....the crowd loved it...I thought is was 2 chords and a digga digga digga digga echoed out guitar. Hated that song even though I played it night after night in a cover band for awhile..on the other hand playing Message in a Bottle by the Police was always fun
