Nate, I’ve posted here a very long time and although you and I don’t agree on many issues I typically find you to be a thoughtful poster and one who, on other topics at least, constantly reassesses your views.

However, on this one topic you seem to have blinders on and don’t analyze the other side except to discount it. To say something is a knee jerk response when the issue has been front and center repeatedly for years, is disingenuous.

How many mass shootings in otherwise progressive nations have to occur before you reassess your views on gun legislation.

It doesn’t have to be a ban, there can be many measures that can 1) make it harder to amass stockpiles of weapons or ammunition and 2) make sure those who do amass those stockpiles are at least somewhat vetted. You can’t get a fully auto rifle without vetting and that doesn’t make this world worse and has not invited a military state. I doubt registration would either.

Will it be knee jerk after the next mass shooting? What about 20 shootings from now? When is it ok to say enough?

I can't speak for Nate and I believe that I made my position pretty clear at the start of this thread, but I just want to say that I think Gun Laws are just the start.

The problem with hate crimes and terrorism is that it comes from a place of devaluing other people to the point that you believe their worth isn't equal to yours, and in many cases that they're life isn't worth anything. To truly solve these issues we have to re-educate adults and educate young people that they do have innate value but so do all the people around them. At least that's my opinion.

In the meantime, we should take whatever steps we can to keep guns away from people who will use them as weapons to needlessly harm others.

I have a knee jerk reaction when I put my hand over a hot flame. It's a good thing too else I'm gonna get badly hurt.

I do understand that legislation would most Mikey not have stopped this, or many shootings. However, there is a realistic chance it could have affected how many were killed if his stockpile was lessened. Or even better, it might have to this nut job and put him on the radar of law enforcement, leading to further research and just possibly then the plot could have been discussed and crisis averted. The chances of that happening might be low, but I’ll take a 5% chance of saving 50 peoples lives.

Agreed. One thing people never seem to mention is that murders have been steadily declining since our country’s murder peak in 1980. They are waaaaay down since then. People like to talk about gun deaths being up, which is true, but the means of murder are insignificant when your talking about the loss of someone’s life. Murders are going down and that’s a good thing.

Deaths by firearm have been on the increase since 1999 (prior before 1999 not available). That's a bad trend.

There are 3 types of murder...single, serial and mass....of the 3 single murders have declined since 1980 as has organized crime coincidentally...mass murders ARE on the rise substantially as are racially, culturally profiled murders. Serial murders are harder to pinpoint because they often cover multiple decades. Mass murder is defined by the FBI as 4 or more victims in one incident..

According to the 2010 FBI crime data, since 1980, single victim killings have dropped by more than 40 percent. While that's very good news, there's a new sobering trend: Mass murders are on the rise. This New York Times article researched the frequency of mass murders. It found during the 20th century there were about one to two mass murders per decade until 1980. Then for no apparent reason they spiked, with nine during the 1980s and 11 in the 1990s. Since the year 2000 there have been at least 26, including the massacre in Aurora, Colorado.

No. You pulling your hand away is addressing the immediate pain of the flame. The knee jerk reaction would be banning open flames so that you would never burn your hand again.

Chop it up how you want. Less people are dying at the hands of another person.

In the meantime, millions of people are on some sort of medication that gets into our water. Not surprised there are a few nutjobs running around.

Murderers are using a different means to accomplish their task, but there are less murders happening period. A lot less.

Shit, if I wanted to twist statistics to my preference the way most news outlets do, I could even suggest that perhaps guns now being used as the primary weapon of choice coincides with the decreasing murder rate, and maybe it’s a contributing factor to less murder. I don’t necessarily believe that, but I wouldn’t be statistically wrong.

It is cameras everywhere that cause the shootings. Can't walk up and choke someone out, you'll get caught on camera.

Seriously, surveillance cameras probably help lower murder statistics.

Hey let’s get some more children on pharmaceutical drugs when they get too boisterous while we’re at it. Couldn’t possibly go wrong.
