Weighing the pros and cons...[IMG]Pros of trading the pick- We get somebody who will make an immediete impact and won't need to wait for a young player to develop- We meet a team need- We make the playoffs next year and the Celtics become relevent again in Boston- Ainge saves his job- Paul Pierce stays and will retire with the Celtics- We will be contenders in the immediete futureCons of trading the pick- We may miss out on a future all-star player (see Brandon Roy in 2006)- We will have to take on a lot of salary for a few more years and won't be able to give our young kids who deserve it big contract extensions- We could be giving another team a future all-star player and giving that team a better chance at winning in the future than us. So we'd just be adding more competition in our way to the title- May not be good down the road because we gave up youth and tried to win NOW- Young players we trade away like Green could become stars elsewhere (see Billups, Johnson)[IMG]Pros of drafting a player- We may get a future all-star player/superstar- We will be getting a top 5 player in THIS draft- We'll be able to compete for a long time with Rondo/Green/Pick/Jefferson if this player pans out- We will be able to resign our young players once Ratliff's contract and Szczerbiak's contracts expire to big dealsCons of drafting a player- Paul Pierce will ask for a trade- Player may never pan out and be a bust and/or take too long to develop- Could be mediocre again next year and continue to lose fans to failure- We could draft somebody that isn't that great and a superstar will go to the next pick..like what happened to Portland with Sam BowieThe way I see it..I'll still be very excited about the team next year whether we make a trade or we draft a player. A TOP 5 PLAYER!

Very well written! What are your views on Al Horford and Yi Jianlian? Which one should the Celts pick? I think if they take Yi, it goes right to your point that Paul P might demand a trade, because Yi would take longer to develop than someone like an Al Horford.

Hell, Jermaine Oneal could be traded to the 3rd spot for all you know, or to the Lakers. Its not going to happen so easily. Im pretty positive Oneal is not coming to Boston.

Like you said, Yi is gonna be a bit of a project. Nobody knows much about him at all. I think unless we make a trade Pierce is gonna ask to be traded regardless of who we pick. And Rapsfan, I didn't actually mean trading the pick straight up for a guy like Jermaine O'Neal. Obviously you would need to package the pick to get him. We have the best expiring contract this offseason with Ratliff as a contract matcher and then talents like Gerald Green, Delonte West, Ryan Gomes etc to send to Indiana. I don't get what you're saying. :dunno:

Not just experience but winning experience.look at the teams that have won the title recently. Spurs, Pistons, Heat, Lakers. They all had/have veterans who know what it takes to be a winner.Look at the young teams in the league, they're all either in the lottery or if you include the Raptors, not experienced enough to win a playoff series.Lebron is 4years in the league, a once in a lifetime player, but still the Cavs have Donyell Marshall and Snow on that team.also with so much youth, playing time becomes a factor as every young player not only wants but believes they deserve the playing time. That can lead to chemistry problems. Also how do you evaluate all that talent if you can't give out enough minutes?there such thing as too much youth. You do need experience to win in this league.

I like what you're saying playa.one small thing, when it comes to letting talent go, I don't think you can use Billups as an example. It took him 5 different teams and several years before he became an all-star level player. It was a question of him finding the right coach and team. He most likely never would have developed that much in Boston.JJ... well we traded away the future for a shot at the Finals, we made the conference Finals.Like Bill Simmons says, it's about winning championships and if you're close you do mortgage the furture to win a title? Yes, because there's nothing better than winning a title.so it was a gamble and it didn't pay off. It hurts now, but if we had gotten title #17, would we have cared? probably.. but not as much. The C's are nowhere near to winning a title. Do they shoot for a big trade and hope for drastic improvement? Or stay with the youth movement and try to find a vet and overpay for their playoff experience and team chemistry rather than their diminishing skills when this team matures? (most likely without Paul)If we keep the #5 and get a star, then yeah it's worth it. If we get an okay player (which this team has tons of) then it was a waste. The more you think about it, the more you go crazy IMO.Right now, with 18 days to go, I think any fan can talk themselves into just about any scenario and make it fit.there's a lot of options, it's gonna be fun to see what Ainge does.

I really don't think they're trading this pick away. Danny loves the draft, I think even if we do trade it, Ainge will make some irrelevant deal and will trade down to like the 21st pick or something like that. Also, Did anyone see that win a night with the draft pick contest on celtics.com? I know that may sound kinda dumb, but why would they create this contest if they were trading the pick? K

Well, that doesn't necessarily mean it has to be the #5 pick, for all we know it's a night out with Sean Williams at 32. Yeah, that'd be sweet. Williams can teach some kid how to roll weed.

K
Celtics.com isn't affiliated with the front office. They just have guys from the press and Wyc delivers them tthe information. They don't know what we're gonna do with the pick but I'm sure some people there have more information. And it's a good idea, I signed up for Celtics Mobile and I think it would be pretty damn sweet to either meet the pick or talk to the pick on your phone which is another benefit to having Celitcs Mobile.

Good point, I agree, but I also hope forcing a panic trade just because we need someone with that "veteran tag" isn't on his agenda either. I don't want him to force a deal and grossly overpay just to put a little grin on Pierce's face. For example, that Rashard Lewis rumor. Hell no.

Even Marion... sure, that rumored package (Ratliff, #5, West) is pretty reasonable for a guy like Marion, but why give up a pick like this and that giant expiring deal for a player that won't get us that far as it is. Say we do that trade, we bring in Marion, we make some noise and improve. Cool, we win 45 games and get eliminated in the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs. Cool, that deal made us competitive but in the end it got us nowhere. So why deal the #5 pick for that? I don't see the point.

By the way, Marion has a player option after this upcoming season. Even if he picked that option up and stayed for that 2nd year left on his contract... let's get real, would he REALLY re-sign with Boston in 2010? Also note he'll be 31 then and he'll still want the same paycheck... mixed with Al's paycheck to go along with the others... adding to the fact that Wyc would rather burn 70 cigarettes on his arm than pay the luxury tax.

yes trading for an all-star vet does mortgage some of the future, but how long are the C's gonna be building for?with FA, it just shouldn't take this long. I am getting impatient with the downward spiral the team is taking.Yes we may not win a title in the next 2 years, but we gotta take a shot at it and see what could happen in 2 years time. Sitting around waiting for Gerald, Perkins, Allen, Rondo and the #5 pick to develop is getting to be too much. What if it takes the #5 pick 4-5 years to develop? If the C's lose Paul for 40 cents on the dollar because he blows up and we get something like Philly did.. you think Al is gonna want to stick around long? The longer I wait the more conflicted I get about keeping the pick. One min it'd be nice to have a good high draft pick, the next I'd rather sell it for something good. I do find I lean more to sell than keep though.I do agree that Ainge shouldn't be 100% keep or sell. He should be patient and see what offers he can get. The longer he waits, the better the offers will be. I don't see any of the 4 teams ahead of Boston looking to move so we should be in the drivers seat when it comes to offers.as for Lewis, I read a rumor that it MAY be possible to get him without giving up the #5 as the Sonics don't have a lot of leverage.IF that could happen (a dream I know) then hell yeah keep the #5.O'Neal would be my first choice to trade the pick for. Joe Johnson, Marion then Gasol.
