This rumor is about a week old, and I don't think it has much substance to it. I honestly don't want to make a deal for Marion, as good as he is. First of all, he has a player option after next season, and let's be real... would be REALLY re-sign with Boston? And would Wyc Grousbeck REALLY be willing to give him the money he wants? I say the answer to both of those questions is a no. Not to mention, getting Marion would make us a competitive playoff team, but at the end of the day it's not enough.

We'll see what's made of it. Shawn Marion is a heck of a player and I would love to have him here, but considering his contract situation, I don't think it's the best way to go.

G'day AllFirst post on here but have been reading post for a while. Basically to keep up with the goings on I follow this forum and watch Sportscenter occasionally. My question to you CelticBalla is why would Marion not be interested in staying at Boston. This may sound like a very naive question but the sports culture in Australia and other sports I follow is that the historically successful teams are able to attract the better players because of their advantage of having that 'culture'. Boston to me have this culture and history that I thought would be able to attract and keep the better players.Any reply to my conundrum would be great!

Welcome AussieCeltic: glad to hear from you. The C's have lost some of that great reputation over the last decade and there's not the draw they once were to players. That is one thing I love about Paul, he appreciates being a celtic and the tradition that comes with that. Hopefully the team can turn it around to help Paul be a large part of that tradition again!I do agree that Marion is not the most ideal trade, but if the Joe Johnson or Rashard Lewis rumor is false or falls through, he'd still be a great addition. You win with talent in this league and he's a talent. If we make no trade, whatever we get at #5 could be great in 2-5 years, or could be a bust, there are very few sure things when it comes to the draft.Marion is a proven talent and with him and Paul on the floor, it would make everyone else's game that much better. If the team turns around and has some success in the playoffs over the next 2 years, then Marion may stay and Wyc would pay. If we're mediocre then it may not happen.Thing is you gotta take a chance sometimes rather than sit there for 5 years aquiring talent and waiting for it to develop. This trade has lost some steam though.I just want Ainge to do something!

Hey Aussie, nice to see you finally post. To answer your question on why I don't think Marion would re-sign with Boston:

    1. He could get more money elsewhere.
    2. He would likely want to play for a contender, in a warmer area than Boston.
    3. I don't think our owners would be willing to give Marion the money he will ask for.

Look, if we bring in a guy like Shawn Marion I will not complain one bit, but I will have questions about his contract negotiations. Could you imagine him being a 1-2 year quick fixer-upper just to put a smile on Pierce's face? Then he leaves, and the #5 pick we traded to Phoenix is blowing up? Wouldn't that hurt? I think it would, which is why I'd rather make a deal for more of a sure thing.

Thanks for that guys. It is greatly appreciated. I suppose 20 years of in the doldrums has diluted Boston's "powerhouse" position in the league and that is a bit sad. :no1: Maybe recruiting a few Aussies would spark the team to its former glory! [IMG] Andrew Bogut could make a good fit and we have a young guy who has nominated for the draft in Brad Newley. He can light it up but defensively he is ordinary. So in saying that hopefully he will stay away from the Boston area! Cheers.
