Bill Paxton is one of dad's favorite actors and he wants to watch some of his movies. So, over the next couple of days we will watch: Aliens Predator 2 Tombstone True Lies (bit part, but it is freaking hilarious!) Apollo 13 The Last Supper Twister Frailty (fantastic directorial debut)
If he ain't in jail I don't care what he thinks or does if he makes good movies. If I'm to boycott actors for their beliefs or words I'm going to have a long list. DeNiro and his full blown TDS would be a good start. Robert is just old now but if he makes a good movie......I'm watching it.
Didn't Michael Shannon say something about old whities needing to die? Something like that. Even movies he makes that I don't like I still like him. Bad script? Yeah, but Michael Shannon was great.... The Shape of Water was OK and he was fabulous in it.
After taking 10 years off and showing the world that he is a bigot on multiple occasions and on multiple levels, in 2010 Gibson "starred" in Edge of Darkness (budget $80m; box office $81.1m=not a big box office draw). Next came Machete Kills in 2013 with a budget of $20m; this movie pulled in a whopping $15m which is $5m million less than the budget, ie also not a big box office draw. The Expendables 3 was popular, but also starred actors like Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and so on, so it shouldn't count. Then came the 2016 sensation, Blood Father! Blood Father cost $15m to make and pulled in $4.8m. Also not a big box office draw. He directed Hacksaw Ridge which did well but probably because people love war stories, they probably didn't realize he was involved, and Jesus people are ironically into Gibson, and he must've been able to get the funding without having to use Jews or blacks or women. In other words, if you want to like Michael Jackson or R Kelly or Kevin Spacey or Mel Gibson or *r***, go for it. But you certainly shouldn't pretend like it's possible without ignoring some glaring deficiencies in character.
You've actually lumped a guy who made some drunken mistakes over a decade ago in with three pedophiles? That tells me something about your character too.
He's an universal bigot, not just a one time, drunken bigot. There are numerous concrete examples. If we want a start a new thread to discuss them, I'm down. Then maybe you can convince me that he is the Shakespeare of buddy comedies and I should look past his transgressions. Or maybe not.
Think of the dumbest thing you’ve ever done or said, when completely shit-faced no less, and then imagine having it secretly videotaped and shown to the world and having it define you for the rest of your life. You got divorced, lost 400m+, have been the recipient of hateful remarks that make your own hateful remarks look tame, essentially exiled from your career for several years, yet you’ve tried to move on, admitted you had a problem with anger and alcohol and nervous breakdowns, gone to AA and remained sober for a decade+, are finally starting to get some traction again in Hollywood, and then there are still strangers who’ve never met you who go on the internet and lump you in with Michael Jackson and Kevin Spacey. I think that’s bullshit. You can find recent examples of people going to bat for him in the last few years who make up the very groups of people his hateful words mentioned back in the day. Why is that? They know who he is better than you or I.
@Hobbesarable! I'm sorry! I promise this is the last one! In roughly 2003, Mel Gibson said, and I quote: "“I mean when the war was over they said it was 12 million. Then it was six. Now it’s four. I mean it’s that kind of numbers game.” Here, he is talking about the Holocaust. And like his father, he seems to be a fucking a Holocaust denier! That, to me, is enough to be disregarded for eternity. In 2006, as you mentioned he said the whole: “Fucking Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” And there is A LOT more from that "low point."But you know, he was just going through some of the alcoholism. Afterwards, he apologized right? I mean step 8 and 9, right? Sure, he says he is sorry to have disgraced himself and his family. Also: “I was loaded and angry and arrested. I was recorded illegally by an unscrupulous police officer who was never prosecuted for that crime. And then it was made public by him for profit, and by members of — we’ll call it the press. So, not fair. I guess as who I am, I’m not allowed to have a nervous breakdown, ever.” Dude is sorry. Clearly. The Passion of the Christ is super anti-semitic, but I mean he was probably just drunk during post-production. Less than 10 years again he was recorded saying all that weird shit to his girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva in which he says that if she got "raped by a pack of [he uses the n-word here] it will be your fault." Just think about all the fights you've had in your life. Have you ever said anything like that? What kind of person says something like that? Answer: a bad person. He paid Oksana for domestic abuse--of which he said, "You know what? You fucking deserve it"--and then we she talked about how she was going to work with a domestic violence charity and said this: "You have to embrace your experience and even — it doesn't matter how painful it might be at the time, and that darker experience, learn from it." After that he took her to court because she had violated a confidentiality clause and therefore could without funds...and I'm just glossing over this stuff. He called Winona Ryder an "oven dodger." He's used bigoted terms for women, gays, african americans, latinos, and obviously jews. He admittedly hit his girlfriend while she held his child. I don't know, man, it just feels like there are better hills to die on. (I was using Michael Jackson and Kevin Spacey because there are not a ton of examples of successful Hollywood bigots that I can think of and they have recently been essentially blacklisted. I'm not here to compare crimes against humanity as much as I'm here to point them out. Donald fucking Sterling was forced to sell the Clippers for saying a fraction of what Mel Gibson has. You can like his movies and whatever--there is a legitimate debate to be had about how do we approach an artist's art after we find out that they are pieces of shit--but to defend him?!? And the redemption story? Sounds cultish.)
The first time I saw him was in Near Dark - you absolutely should check it out (he steals the movie - "I hates it when they shaves"). It has a bunch of people from Aliens in it because it was directed alongside (by Kathryn "Hurt Locker" Bigelow, who was married to Cameron at the time). I haven't seen A Simple Plan but it's very well thought of, too.
You are right. The best thing about Near Dark is Bill Paxton. It's been years since I've seen it. A Simple Plan is a good movie and I would personally watch it again. I am just going with dad's list and what he wants to watch.
Next week we'll watch some Christopher Reeve movies: Superman Quadrilogy Somewhere in Time Deathtrap The Aviator Noises Off Mortal Sins Morning Glory Black Fox Trilogy
Good movie with James Stewart. Another one of dad's favorites. We'll have a James Stewart movie marathon closer to Christmas.
