I've never been a Whiteside proponent (attitude issues plus horrible free throw shooting plus limited game), but I am fully on board with this trade. It's a no-brainer.

I did a statistical comparison of Whiteside's rebounding marks compared to all time Blazer marks...

    defensive rebound rate:

    Hassan Whiteside 2017-18 - 36.6
    Hassan Whiteside 2018-19 - 35.6
    Hassan Whiteside 2016-17 - 35.3

    Marcus Camby 2010-11 - 35.2
    Hassan Whiteside 2014-15 - 34.7
    Bill Walton 1977-78 - 34.2
    Marcus Camby 2011-12 - 33.2
    Joel Przybilla 2008-09 - 33.1
    Bill Walton 1975-76 - 32.4
    Bill Walton 1976-77 - 32.3

    and for offensive rebound rate:

    Hassan Whiteside 2018-19 - 16.3
    Greg Oden 2008-09 - 15.7
    Hassan Whiteside 2014-15 - 15.6
    Chris Dudley 1994-95 15.6
    Hassan Whiteside 2011-12 - 15.4
    Zach Randolph 2001-02 - 15.1
    Ed Davis 2015-16 - 14.4
    Hassan Whiteside 2017-18 - 14.3
    Jermaine O'Neal 1999-00 - 14.0
    Marcus Camby 2010-11 - 13.8

    and, total rebound rate:

    Hassan Whiteside 2018-19 - 25.9
    Hassan Whiteside 2014-15 - 25.4
    Hassan Whiteside 2017-18 - 25.4

    Marcus Camby 2010-11 - 24.1
    Hassan Whiteside 2016-17 - 24.0
    Marcus Camby 2011-12 - 23.1
    Joel Przybilla 2008-09 - 22.8
    Ed Davis 2017-18 - 21.3
    Chris Dudley 1995-96 - 21.3
    Bill Walton 1976-77 - 21.2
    Joel Przybilla 2007-08 - 21.0

and then, I did a search of NBA players who have played at least 340 games and ranked by career:

    total rebound rate:

    1 Hassan Whiteside - 24.5%
    2 Andre Drummond - 24.4%
    3 Dennis Rodman - 23.4%
    4 Reggie Evans - 21.9%
    5 DeAndre Jordan - 21.6%

    defensive rebound rate:

    1 Hassan Whiteside - 34.6%
    2 Andre Drummond - 32.8%
    3 Dick Cunningham - 30.8%
    4 Bill Walton - 30.2%
    5 Swen Nater - 30.1%

    blocked shot rate:

    1 Manute Bol - 10.2%
    2 Jim McIlvaine - 8.8%
    3 Shawn Bradley -7.8%
    4 Hassan Whiteside - 7.3%
    5 Theo Ratliff - 7.2%

he's also 12th all time in offensive rebound rate

seems pretty clear that a motivated Whiteside will be the best glass cleaner Portland has had

Here's another guy that Whiteside needs to prove wrong. I do hope that at a minimum Blazer coaches and GM sit down with him and ask can you tell us what went wrong in Miami and is there anything you could have done to make it better?
I guess you have to wonder why the writer doesn't at least point out some issues with Leonard. And wonder how bad Harkless was that Miami had to give a pick to get rid of him.
"There have been a handful of compelling candidates here, but my worst deal winner goes to the entire Blazers offseason. Keeping Al-Farouq Aminu was always going to be difficult, so maybe they get a pass on that one. Likewise, Kent Bazemore offers more shooting than Evan Turner, so sure, they can get the benefit of the doubt on that trade as well. But why did Portland trade for Hassan Whiteside? Were Heat games blacked out in Portland over the past few years? The Nurkic injury forced Portland’s hand to some degree, but Whiteside is uncomfortable in space on offense, which means it’s unlikely he’ll be unlocking Lillard and McCollum the same way Nurkic did. He’s also spacy as a defender, and his Heat teams were generally better when he was on the bench."
I think the writer's main issue was that he thought Portland had to do more: "The Whiteside deal could work fine, but to me it signifies a front office that has run out ideas as it reshuffles the deck a year after being swept out of the conference finals. There were other teams that made questionable deals (Charlotte, Washington, Phoenix, etc) but not many that did so with a potential title shot on the line. All of the moves in Portland were lateral at best, and altogether, this is more likely a step back."

This is a guy that did not improve whatsover after getting his money. I hate dudes like that.

I really hope he buys in-- can't understand dudes who have motivation issues when they've come up from nothing. As mentioned earlier, probably the best test for Dame/CJ's leadership so far.

I can’t imagine Dame wasn’t in in this decision to some level. Pretty sure Dame saw what the team needed and is up to making it happen.

apparently, Dame was in the room when Portland was waiting on Kanter to decide on accepting the tax-MLE, so I'd assume he was closely 'in-the-know' when Portland pivoted to Hood for the MLE and traded for Whiteside

Apparently Kanter was our #1 target in free agency. Woulda always figured it to be Hood. Glad it worked out this way, and the Miami thing presented itself afterward once Dallas backed out.

Do you remember when we traded scrub Jermaine O'neal for all-star Dale Davis? I do. Nobody could believe Indiana would make such a trade (yes I'm sure there are you out there who knew better)
Now I'm not saying Meyers Leonard is going to blow up, or Whiteside is on a downward path, but sometimes a sure thing doesn't turn out that way.

I do remember. I railed against that trade. Also, I was feeling pretty hopeful Meyers would step up in a starting role this season. In the past I didn't want Whiteside at all. But I can see why they did it this season. We'll see. However Whiteside works out, I won't be surprised either way.

Blazers made it to the WCF. Then replaced half the team.

    That's a bold strategy Cotton.

Let's see if it pays off.

Whiteside and who? Rodney Hood re-introduction?

EDIT: Quick says it's the Dame extension and Hood re-signing.

    Not Whiteside.

They're having a double press conference for Dubljevic.
