Former US President Ronald Reagan described African delegates to the UN as "monkeys", in newly-unearthed tapes published by a US magazine.

He made the comment in a 1971 telephone call with then-President Richard Nixon.

Mr Reagan, who was governor of California at the time, was angered that African delegates at the UN sided against the US in a vote.

Members of the Tanzanian delegation started dancing after the UN voted to recognise China and expel Taiwan.

Mr Reagan, who was a supporter of Taiwan, called the president the following day to express his apparent frustration.

He said: "To see those... monkeys from those African countries - damn them, they're still uncomfortable wearing shoes!"

Mr Nixon, who quit as president in 1974, can then be heard laughing.

It's as if Trump had a twin.

Not surprised, both Nixon and Reagan were quite racist.

It's going to be so much fun seeing the next few generations get absolutely destroyed by all the tweets, videos, snapchats, facebook posts, and other social media things. Nobody is perfect and with all the media content that we create, it's going to be so easy to find something on just about anyone.

I tend to believe that the opposite will happen - indeed, is already happening. The availability of dirt on so many, and so much dirt on Trump in particular, will render dirt less of a disqualifier, less of a story. The Trump fans have already made it crystal clear that you can be a douchebag of epic proportion and half the country will still support you if you are wearing the right jersey.

Heck, future campaigns may use this sort of thing to their advantage. For example, a campaign ad with a picture of a bruised and bloody woman and the caption "I'll beat the Chinese just like I beat my wife!"

Let's not pretend like this is a new thing.

Kitzhaber was a giant tool and he got re-elected in Oregon. It doesn't matter if you're GOP or Liberal, you're going to get the vote because of the lesser of two evils.

Eh, I was thinking more along the lines of gender politics.
No kidding. Who's defining things as "girly" anymore? Are liking "Frozen" and wearing capes gender-specific? Pretty offensive to me.

I don't think people knew Kitzhaber was a giant tool when he was reelected. An elected official turning out to be corrupt is a different thing than electing someone known to be corrupt.

Trump is a new thing in terms of the scale of his known douchebaggery, and the height of his office.

Pretty sure he was being investigated while he was running for his 4th term and people still voted for him. He had to step down almost immediately after taking office.

Thank you.
It's a respected publication. Wikipedia writes -
"In June 2006, the Chicago Tribune named The Atlantic one of the top ten English-language magazines, describing it as "a gracefully aging ... 150-year-old granddaddy of periodicals" because "it keeps us smart and in the know" with cover stories on the then-forthcoming fight over Roe v. Wade."

Sure, nobody's perfect. I've done things I am embarrassed about.

But I never talked like that.

And I am not the president.

I did when I was 10 but by the time I was 12, not quite a teenager, I grew out of it. Of course, I had an advantage, I had a brain.

Two assholes trying to mask their racism by acting like nice guys.....problem is only one was an actor who could pull it off. I've known about Nixon since I was 18 and worked for him....giant paranoid asshole who lived in fear most of his life.

Yes Reagan was nearly as racist as LBJ, who was easily the most racist POTUS in my lifetime.

I'd put Nixon ahead of Reagan also, but the actual policies of LBJ firmly and deliberately established African Americans as second class citizens dependent on the government for everything imaginable.

Murdered a President to become President and re-enslaved African Americans who had been free for a hundred years.

Trump has done more for minorities than any President since Lincoln, and he didn't kill 500,000 Americans to do it.

No other President comes to mind as doing anything but harming minorities, or just ignoring them.

BTW, a reminder that Dem 2020 Candidate Tom Steyer, among his many other sins, was the guy who bribed Kitzhaber's wife, then later "bought off" the fake prosecution of the former guv. Sleazeball Kitzhaber and his evil queen are now Bend residents and created quite a stir during the investigation when someone videoed them dumping a truckload of documents at Knoww Landfill.

LBJ, the man who pushed through the Civil Rights act and the Voting Rights act is a racist. Hmmm, I wonder if this holds water. Nah

There are literally 100s of quotes from LBJ where he uses the N word.

He was the worst kind of racist.....if there can be one worse than another, and that is one who pretends not to be

Fuck him

No words of derision for Nixon who did worse? Now, how about Trump?
At least LBJ did something to help these fellow human beings. What did Nixon do for them? What has Trump done for them?

Nothing. Not sure what that has to do with LBJ?
