Just want to say Im not arguing that Christmas, amongst other holidays doesn't have pagan things sprinkled in with our modern ways of celebrating them. Im well aware of Yule tree’s and other things that been molded in to Christmas.

Though I really dislike the corporate greed part of holidays. Ive got no problem with anyone saying Im going to celebrate this holiday because its important to me for whatever reason they want it to be important for them.

Edit: My original point was just that AFAIK the real thinking behind december 25th being chosen is all theories.

I have done my research, that doesn't mean Im infallible, but anyways. I gotta get ready to go to downtown, really looking forward to that...

If we do, does it not mean we have to eat Mars bars?

I love Halloween. I would have no problem if it were held on the last Saturday of the month.

    ARE CHRISTMAS TREES IDOLATROUS?- Introduction
An argument against Christmas which you hear quite a bit these days is that Christmas trees are condemned in the Bible. Is this really true?

ARE CHRISTMAS TREES IDOLATROUS?- Christmas Trees in Jeremiah?
Sometimes it is said that Christmas trees are condemned in Jeremiah 10, verses 2 – 4, where God says, “the customs of the peoples are delusion, because it is wood cut from the forest, the work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool. They decorate it with silver and gold, they fasten it with nails and a hammer so that it will not totter.”

ARE CHRISTMAS TREES IDOLATROUS?- The Reality
Although this may sound like a reference to Christmas trees, it really is not. In this passage God is condemning idols which are carved out of wood and used as objects of worship; thus, in the very next verse God ridicules the idols because they cannot talk and cannot walk! Obviously, this criticism is not aimed at Christmas trees at all.

ARE CHRISTMAS TREES IDOLATROUS?- The Real Origin of Christmas Trees
The fact of the matter is that the Christmas tree originated in Christian Germany about two thousand years after Jeremiah’s criticisms of wooden idols. It originated from two Christian symbols found in homes at Christmas time. The first was a “Paradise tree,” an evergreen which was hung with apples which represented the tree of life in the Garden of Eden. The second symbol was a “Christmas pyramid.” This of course was a triangular shelf holding Christmas figurines and decorated with a star. By about the 16th century these two symbols had been combined into the Christian Christmas tree.

    ARE CHRISTMAS TREES IDOLATROUS?- Conclusion
Thus, the Christmas tree is a thoroughly Christian symbol, and Christians ought not to feel guilty for having one of them in their home. On the other hand, the Christmas tree is not essential to Christmas, and Christians may, of course, do without it if they choose to. If you see a Christmas tree in the home of a non-Christian friend or a relative, you might take the opportunity to point to it as the symbol of the fact that Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem so that they might have eternal life. On Christmas trees, that’s the CRI perspective. I’m Hank Hanegraaff.

Theres a lot of things in modern Christmas celebrations that did come from pagan rituals, that doesn't mean everyone who celebrates christmas partakes in them, but mainstream christmas does have interesting roots. Christians can try to act like it was all theirs but historically speaking it wasn't.

The argument I would make is, its not necessarily about what things used to symbolize or mean, but what do those things mean now, or an a much more personal level what do they mean to an individual.

Why an individual celebrates any holiday is often personal, and it goes beyond just religion and culture. If someone finds joy in celebrating Christmas because to them it represents a day to celebrate the Birth of Christ thats fine. If they want to celebrate it for pagan reasons thats fine, if they want to not celebrate it at all also fine, or if its just a time they get to spend with family or friends, why would someone get upset at another person for celebrating a holiday for any of those reasons?

There are only 365 days in a year. There are a lot of important events for individuals that may have happened on the same day. An example, my Anniversary is March 17th, when we set the date we had no idea it was St. Patricks day. I will always celebrate st patricks day because its my anniversary. Because others are celebrating it for other reasons doesnt make that day any more or less important for me.

If you don't remember the past, you're doomed to repeat it.

The Catholic church did it for control.

That's largely what religion is for... Control...

I agree that religion is a way for man to have control.
There are many religions where its man's attempt to reach God or become one.
Christianity, is unique in that its God's attempt to reach man. GRACE (Gods Riches At Christ Expense)

I love a nicely decorated Christmas tree. I love colorful Christmas lights.
    I enjoy Halloween decorations.
    I really like Thanksgiving decorations.
I see nothing in that that conflicts with my Christianity which is a Christianity of love and caring for the disadvantaged.

I think they should keep the dates as is for Halloween, I know its hard to do late evening activities, but most adult parties go to the closest weekend.
