Georgetown knocks off No. 17 Villanova 85-73

Patrick Ewing's Georgetown Hoyas and Villanova added another bit of history to the teams' rivalry.

Ewing, whose collegiate career ended in a stunning loss to the Wildcats in the 1985 national championship game, earned his biggest coaching victory to date against Villanova.

Jessie Govan had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Mac McClung scored 21 points and Georgetown beat No. 17 Villanova 85-73 on Wednesday night, snapping a nine-game losing streak against the Wildcats.

    S. Hauser, Anim lead No. 11 Marquette past Providence 76-58

With the Big East's leading scorer slowed by an injury, No. 11 Marquette had to look elsewhere.

Fortunately for the Golden Eagles, several of Markus Howard's teammates enjoyed hot hands at Providence's expense.

Sam Hauser ended a three-game shooting slump with 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as Marquette completed a season sweep of Providence on Saturday, 76-58. Sacar Anim added 18 points for Golden Eagles, who are in first place in the Big East with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Xavier sends No. 17 Villanova to 3rd straight loss, 66-54

Xavier players ran to the student section to slap hands after their biggest win of the season. A couple of weeks ago, nobody could have anticipated them knocking off No. 17 Villanova by double digits.

Those low expectations made it all the sweeter.

Naji Marshall scored 17 points and Xavier used a big surge in the second half to rally past Villanova 66-54 Sunday , leaving the Wildcats with three straight losses in Big East play for the first time since the conference was reconfigured.

Samuels scores 29, Villanova beats No. 10 Marquette 67-61

Jermaine Samuels' point production mirrored Villanova's win total over the last three games: a big 0.

Samuels morphed from scoreless to sensational to deny No. 10 Marquette a piece of the Big East crown Wednesday night. He hit five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 29 points as defending national champion Villanova snapped a three-game losing streak with a 67-61 win over the Golden Eagles.

Paschall sends No. 25 Nova past Friars 73-62 in Big East

With its chances of a third straight Big East Conference Tournament title on the line, the players who carried No. 25 Villanova most of the season stepped up and took control.

Eric Paschall had 20 points and 10 rebounds, Collin Gillespie hit two 3-pointers in a game-deciding 17-5 run and point guard Phil Booth was a steadying influence as the top-seeded Wildcats beat Providence 73-62 in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Howard scores 30 as No. 23 Marquette routs SJU to snap skid

Just when it seemed No. 23 Marquette was about to let a fifth straight game slip away, Markus Howard showed everyone why he was the Big East player of the year.

Howard scored 12 of his 30 points during a game-breaking 23-2 second-half run, and the Golden Eagles routed St. John's 86-54 in the conference quarterfinals Thursday night to stop their four-game slide.

No. 25 Villanova rallies past Xavier in OT in Big East semis

ven when Villanova looks vulnerable, it's awfully difficult to put away the Wildcats.

Especially at the Big East Tournament.

Phil Booth scored 28 points, Jermaine Samuels hit a trio of critical 3-pointers and No. 25 Villanova rallied past Xavier 71-67 in overtime Friday night to reach its fifth straight conference championship game.

Seton Hall beats Marquette 81-79 to reach Big East final

Instead of a showdown between the Big East's top two scorers, Seton Hall-Marquette devolved into a chippy foul-fest and ended with the league's player of the year coming up short on a potential winning 3.

After 57 fouls -- including nine technicals -- were called, 85 free throws were shot and three players were ejected, Marquette star Markus Howard had a good look in the waning seconds and a chance to make up for one of his worst games of the season. The shot hit the front of the rim at the buzzer, and Seton Hall advanced to the Big East Tournament championship with an 81-79 victory Friday night in a game that had just about everybody involved struggling to make sense of it all.

Villanova wins record third straight Big East title

Phil Booth entered the New York Knicks' locker room -- only the best for the defending champs at Madison Square Garden -- wearing a net around his neck. The senior guard stopped at every locker to give each Villanova teammate a hand clap and a bro hug.

Booth has been at Villanova for five years and has won two national titles. The Wildcats have played in the past five Big East tournament championship games, winning four, and Booth has been around for all of it.

This certainly isn't the best team he has been part of, but it can boast an unprecedented accomplishment.

With Booth and fellow senior Eric Paschall leading the way, the 25th-ranked and top-seeded Wildcats became the first team to win three consecutive Big East tournaments, holding off Seton Hall 74-72 on Saturday.

Defending champ Villanova survives 61-57 over Saint Mary's

Villanova got off to a slow start in defense of its NCAA championship against a determined, defensive-minded Saint Mary's team that came in confident after a season-defining win.

But the Wildcats, a No. 6 seed in this NCAA Tournament after an up-and-down season, have one thing no team in the field of 64 has: a pair of leaders who have won two national titles.

Phil Booth scored 20 points, fellow senior Eric Paschell added 14 and Villanova held off 11th-seeded Saint Mary's 61-57 on Thursday night.

Powell scores 27, leads No. 12 Seton Hall past Wagner 105-71

Seton Hall cruised to victory in the absence of coach Kevin Willard. Star guard Myles Powell is looking forward to getting his mentor back.

Powell scored 27 points to lead No. 12 Seton Hall to a 105-71 win over Wagner on Tuesday night, without Willard on the sidelines.

Robinson-Earl spurs No. 10 Villanova past Army in opener

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl became one of the handful of Villanova freshmen to start an opener in 19 seasons under Jay Wright.

    Inexperienced? Perhaps.

    Sensational? Absolutely.

Robinson-Earl led a new-look Villanova to a familiar rout, with 24 points and 13 rebounds in the No. 10 Wildcats' 97-54 win over Army on Tuesday night.

Marshall, Jones lead No. 19 Xavier to 81-63 win over Siena

Tyrique Jones finished as one of Xavier's leading scorers. His biggest contribution may have come during the first media timeout.

The Jones, a senior, lit into his teammates for what coach Travis Steele described as sloppy play against Siena.

"We were trying to hit home runs too much, and that was leading to easy baskets for Siena," Steele said. "I let them know it, and Tyrique did, too. He said it was unacceptable. He was a great voice in that timeout. He's like an extra coach on the floor."

Jones then went out and led by example. He and Naji Marshall each scored 20 points and No. 19 Xavier beat Siena 81-63.

No. 21 Xavier rallies past Missouri 63-58 in overtime

Xavier had made only two 3-pointers all game, none in the second half. Down by three in the closing seconds, the 21st-ranked Musketeers desperately needed somebody to finally hit from long range.

Naji Marshall swished one from the top of the key , and Xavier was finally on its way.

Marshall's clutch 3 tied it in regulation, and he made a pair of free throws in overtime Tuesday night as Xavier overcame poor shooting and rallied for a 63-58 victory over Missouri.
