Ya see, this is what I expected from you. At what point did I make this about me?
I thought it was a cool idea to see why people think they know more than others. What makes somebody an expert. Because somebody comes on here and posts a bunch of stats, do they know more..... as opposed to somebody who coached for 30 years.
Curious why you wouldn't just give your opinion and felt you had to post this.

I guess maybe there might not be an acceptable definition of basketball expert...? Jack Ramsey was probably an expert. Gregg Popovich is likely one. So is Phil Jackson

I think if somebody here claimed to be an expert, he'd get about 17 tons of flak. I don't have basketball expertise...I have basketball opinions, and yeah, I have plenty of basketball biases.

See, this makes me think you didn't read my post completely. I wasn't the one who questioned your basketball knowledge. I simply pointed out why I could see someone else posting why they think you didn't have much knowledge because you don't drop it on here. I also didn't say your jokes or Twitter posts were a bad thing either.

Im kind of curious, you run in basketball circles as a Job. You talk with players and coaches and scouts at least once in a while. BBIQ has to come up here and there how do they judge it?

They can come on the internet and laugh and say we dont know what were talking about it and that may be true, but tomorrow they could get fired and it might question if they know what they’re talking about right?

Anyways, has it come up, like when they’re evaluating a coaches performance or a scout, or determining if you know what a basketball is, what do you think they’re looking for?

Right on, I hear you. Ya, if people are using this joint as a measuring stick of basketball IQ, something is very wrong with them.

But Sly you can plainly see that was the reason why I started the thread. To see what everybody else's opinion was about themselves and what they think of hoop IQ. I didn't ask anybody to give their opinion on me.

You haven't given your opinion man. What makes somebody knowledgable? Playing the game, watching the game, studying the game?

I think he needs to tell someone that they gotta quit having other stuff on the screen when the games going! Lots of missed plays this year has me really questioning their basketball knowledge! :smiley-195517897341:emotions:

Everyone but you on this forum has little to no connections to talking with actual NBA players, coaches, GMs, or whatever. This is all we have man!

I could be the most knowledgeable basketball mind ever but I'd never get a chance to actually prove it.

All the above. Playing the game, even if it is just for fun helps you learn strategies and gives you a sense of just how spectacular some of these guys are. Watching enough basketball is certainly helpful. I've watched every Blazer game since they've all been on TV. That alone makes me pretty knowledgeable about them like most others in here. Studying the game is great but it doesn't do much if you don't know what to look for.

Just had a great conversation on the plane with Assistant Coach John Mccullough. He asked how I got into the business and then I asked him. He told me his story as a college player and as a pro before he got into coaching. I would consider him an old school Xs and Os coach as opposed to an analytics type. I don't think you can get a coaching job and stay in the league without having tons of hoop knowledge. But you also have to have opportunities right?
What if you are a childhood friend of somebody who grew up a coach and he gets you a job on his staff. Can you obtain knowledge by osmosis? (I had to look that up)
Do you naturally getting smarter about the game by being in coaches meetings and clinics.....one would hope.
    What do you think?

No one would ever get hired off the streets with no coaching experience so yeah connections are everything.

I know Chad Buchanan and Tom Penn were friends with Kevin Pritchard and that's how they got their jobs.
