Has anyone else not heard of Purvis Short? Episode 11 of "Around The NBA with Chris & Eric" is up now at nbachriseric.com. Will be up at Apple Podcasts and Stitcher Radio later tonight.
Yes, I've heard of Purvis Short. He was one of my favorite Non Blazers during the 80's, mostly because he had a funny name. Decent pro.
Watched him play many times when I lived in SF in the 80's. As I recall he had quite the arc on his shot.
I remember Purvis Short as getting 50 points in an NBA game. I might be wrong; didn't check. Sacramento coach Bill Russell made Purvis Ellison the 1st pick in the draft (again I'm only 95% sure, haven't checked). I'm sure of this, though: Ellison was underwhelming due to undersize and constant injuries, not nervousness, but due to the rhyme was quickly nicknamed "Nervous Purvis." After his rookie year, the local P.R. Dept., fanboys, and media spread the "Never Nervous" nickname. After mean-spirited public criticism of the draft choice, the asshole owner fired Russell. The owner did the same to one of the greatest NBA coaches, Dick Motta, who made his last stop there on his way out of the league.
I lived in the Bay Area as a kid and went to see Purvis Short play a ton. Big time scorer and had a weird shot but it went in. Sleepy Floyd, Larry Smith, Lester Conner, early Chris Mullin, and the dreadful Joe Barry Carroll. Not a lot of winning but fun team.
