I think if we wanted him, Whiteside would get him, unless Cavs are stupidly stubborn. Apparently teams are insisting Cavs give THEM a pick to compensate them for taking Love ('s contract) off their hands.

Would that be a stupid long-term move? Probably, but we're kind of stuck now anyway, what with Dame + CJ's crazy contracts. Would it be a good short-term (i.e., before Nurk's or Zach's return) move? Well I happen to think that Whiteside's defense is overrated and our offense would certainly get more potent. It might lead to some 150-148 scorelines, but what the hell.

I meant if they traded Bazemore, it would take some youth (Trent, Simons, Little, etc).

If we're going to get stuck with a contract I kind of prefer a wing type versus another big. Someone like Robert Covington or Otto Porter. Bigs are much easier to get for cheap nowadays.

Covington's contract is actually pretty good and similar to Nurkic's where as Porter is another albatros contract for a good but not great player, I know he only has one year left, but don;t know what his expectations are for his next contract and could end up walking for nothing. I don;t see him opting out of $28mil next year though.

    Agreed.

I feel like we are better off now and for the future sticking with Zach as the long term starting 4 / back-up 5 and seeing if we can somehow convert our expirings+assets into a wing like the 2 you proposed.

Covington feels more attainable (and a better fit skill+salary wise), especially if KAT really wants out and they look to rebuild.

It's been talked to death, but a Cov + Deing for Whiteside + stuff does makes a lot of sense for both teams.

I wonder if a protected 2021 1st would be enough to sweeten the pot for them.

That's been my favorite trade for awhile now. Dieng would be just fine as a stop gap until the bigs are healthy and we get Covington's defense for two more years after this one.

Then I'd see what it would take to do a deal with Detroit revolving around Bazemore + stuff for Snell and Rose.

    Next year you'd have:

Guards - Dame, CJ, Rose, Simons

Wings - Covington, Snell, Hood (assuming opt-in)

Bigs - Nurk, Collins, Dieng, Skal (if re-signed)

Plus Little and Trent if neither are part of those other trades. Then they could use the MLE to add a PF or a SF/PF type to fill out the roster. Also, Dieng and Snell would be tradeable pieces like Baze and Whiteside are this year when they are in the last year of their deals instead of still having another year.

I would prefer Bazemore and a pick for Covington and filler so that we have Whiteside for at least a bit longer in case Nurkic isn't ready. I would avoid taking on Deing if possible and would rather let Whiteside walk than take on another year of Deings contract. Maybe a deal like below and a pick to Minnesota.

    1) We can't acquire Jake this season since we were the team that traded him.

    2) Taking on Dieng is a way to sweeten the deal for Minnesota so we don't have to give up as much.

    3) Minnesota is hard capped this year so they probably don't want to take on almost $4 million dollars which pushes them closer to the tax line.

    4) Letting Whiteside walk basically leaves the team with no tradeable pieces this summer to match salary with since we'd be left with guys unlikely to be traded with Dame, CJ, and Nurk and the rest of the roster of cheap contracts. So basically it's like wasting an opportunity if Whiteside walks. I agree that makes us slightly worse this year but we're bad with Whiteside so I don't really see why that would warrant not trading him.

Are you implying that Olshey is dumb for not being willing to trade CJ for Love?

I can't believe anyone would have that stance.
