Personally I think it makes a lot more sense to take on future money now and a move for someone like Porter makes more financial sense than it did two days ago. The way I look at it is if you’re a contender, being in the tax is just part of the deal. Can’t just waste the core of the rosters prime. They can get under the tax for this season, I mean it makes sense, but hopefully that also means more serious moves for next season and beyond.

I'm just worried about making it harder to make the necessary moves this summer if they duck the tax. Say they trade Whiteside and a pick (maybe 2 2nds again) for Portis (with Taj or whatever salary going to Dallas). Then they decide to not pick up the option on Portis or Ariza. That basically leaves them with roughly the equivalent of the Full-MLE in cap space, which they could get anyway being over the cap and just using the MLE instead of the space. So then you think if that's the case they might as well keep one or both of those two next season and still use the MLE. I guess they'd have two decent sized trade exceptions to be creative with too but with basically no 2nd round picks through 2027 if we traded two more of them or even worse if they had to give up a 1st to duck the tax then that further limits the assets to use in trades using those exceptions.

That's why I'm really hoping that the savings from the last trade were enough to trade Whiteside without needing to clear more. Having an Otto Porter or Covington/Dieng type haul would be a much better jump on next year.

Hold up doesn’t Dallas need a center? Weren’t they talked about re: Drummond?

How about Whiteside and Hezonja for Delon Wright and Courtney Lee?

Close again but isn't quite enough to get under the tax.

Olshey has a good relationship with a Griffin, how about Favors and Melli for Whiteside, Swanigan, and a pick? That gets Portland over $7M closer. Is that enough?

I like the idea, but this would still leave Portland ~$1m over the tax.

Dammit, can someone then clear this up, just how much does Portland need to dump to dip the tax?

    Around the deadline:
CHI Gets: Hassan Whiteside, Trevor Ariza, Caleb Swanigan
SAC Gets: Cris Felicio, 2020 POR 1st (Top 16 Protected), 2022 POR 2nd
POR Gets: Otto Porter, Nemanja Bjelica

Gets us under the tax and lands us two elite shooting (40%+) forwards.

Trade NBA still has Gasol's full contract and has Whiteside's contract as 27.9 instead of 27.09

yes. Especially if he returns this year and if we’ve hung onto a Whiteside.

mitigates the risk and gives us bragging rights that we are the team with the best combo of centers

perhaps a Nurk (high) and Whiteside (low) twin towers on occasion?

as an aside, I’d take Whiteside over Aldridge moving into next year, so I see little point in trading for LMA. How about pitching Whiteside and getting him an extension so that he can stay!? And move CJ for a bigger guard or wing; DeRozan with Dame sounds like a stronger duo that Dame with CJ if you ask me

I think keeping both Hassan and Nurk on the same team is a recipe for disaster. They both have had issues like that in the past. They want to feel they are the man so you will probably think i get 48 minutes of elite play at C, but you might also get both of your Cs underperforming.

Would you do Whiteside/Little and our 1st round pick for Love and the Cavs 1st round pick?

Oh, that's actually interesting if we made it like the right to swap picks just in case ours moved up if we didn't make the playoffs. That's a Love trade scenario I might actually consider but I don't see the Cavs agreeing to it.

There we go, that’s what we need to clear.
