That’s the spirit! Because, clearing $27 million off the cap next year would be horrible.

When trading for players with "issues", it's a good thing IF they end up panning out. Why?

It simply takes a lot less to go out and get that player. It'd take less to go out and get Otto Porter than if he'd been healthy all along. So if we go get him and then he ends up being healthy for us, the reward is the same and we got him at a discount.

At some point, Portland will likely have to take a risk on someone, I just don't think the reward from someone like Love is enough for us to lock ourselves into that roster, because that's what his contract would do. At this point, Griffin is probably too risky as well, but if Detroit simply wanted off his contract and we traded Whiteside for him then Griffin got healthy and regained form (big IF)? Then that provides the most reward possible.

That's the thing though, I don't really like the reward for most players out there right now, which is why I want to somehow increase our flexibility going into the off-season and next year, so that we can push off that decision and retain enough assets to pounce when the time is right.

It's also why Porter is my #1 target. Perfect fit, likely available at a discount, and if he's still hurt then he's a $27M expiring this off-season and next year, so he'd help our flexibility regardless (therefore, he's a no risk, decent reward option).

I also think Porter could be better for us than RoCo. He's not quite the defender RoCo is but Porter is still a good one, and he provides much more on the offensive end (3pt shooting, better playmaking and ball handling for a forward), and he can probably be had for less.

RoCo is definitely option #2, but I think Minnesota is asking for too much and won't settle for anything less than their current asking price.

Whiteside might not have any takers especially with a playoff team. Other teams not going give a good core player to land Whiteside it's just not going to happen. If team does they got to get close his salary to trade for him and how many players or draft picks they going to give us for him. If makes another trade it will a small one and my filling it just might be Trent or Mario. I hoping it's not Trent.

I’d honestly be pretty loose with the protections in a theoretical Covington trade. Something like top 10 protected. I wouldn’t care about losing the 12th pick in this years draft. Covington is a perfect fit. Shit take on Dieng too. We could use his expiring anyway.

Yes, Blazers would definitely have to give up some valuable asset along with Whiteside to get back a good core player. I don't think anyone would argue with that or is expecting different.

Kevin Pelton. I’d be surprised if they got anything more. He’s a complimentary player, not a star.

Lotsa demand for him and his contract, tho. I don't wanna give up much more than what you suggested for him. If you rank our tradeable assets, that pick is prolly #1 on the list.

i suspect he will be part of a package going out to golden state for d'angelo russell. not sure our expiring will hold the same value as minny was rumored to be targeting him in free agency.

What's a trade you would like to see?

Pelton: The Portland Trail Blazers sending this year's first-round pick (with protection in case they miss the playoffs and win a top-four spot in the lottery) to Minnesota for Covington. The Timberwolves are too far from competing right now for Covington's complementary skill set to help them, but his game and contract ($36 million over this season and the next two) would fit perfectly in Portland next to Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.

Can this be merged to the 'trade idea' thread?
I believe someone else already posted Pelton's comments

I sure like the idea of Covington, and his contract, a lot more than the idea of Porter and his contract

I just don't think the Blazers have the assets to get him unless they ratchet down the protection on that 1st round pick to a far too risky a level. I'd hate it if Portland gave up an 11th pick for Covington because Covington isn't going to significantly change the trajectory of the team

I think Portland’s best chance to land him is if they took on Dieng.

I think we are placing way too much value on the pick, we have Trent, Simons, Little, Zach, and Skal... that’s a TON of youth

We can afford to trade a first for a premier 3&D player on a friendly contract.

well I said the 11th pick, so in the last decade these guys were on the board at the 11th pick:

Larry Sanders, Eric Bledsoe, Avery Bradley, Hassan Whiteside

Klay Thompson, Alec Burks, Kawhi Leonard, Nikola Vučević, Tobias Harris, Kenneth Faried, Nikola Mirotić, Jimmy Butler, Bojan Bogdanović

Jae Crowder, Draymond Green, Khris Middleton

Steven Adams, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Tim Hardaway. Rudy Gobert

Dario Šarić, Zach LaVine, Jusuf Nurkić, Gary Harris, Rodney Hood, Clint Capela, Bogdan Bogdanović, Joe Harris, Jerami Grant ,Nikola Jokić, Jordan Clarkson

Myles Turner, Devin Booker, Kelly Oubre, Bobby Portis, Kevon Looney, Montrezl Harrell, Richaun Holmes, Josh Richardson

Domantas Sabonis, Malik Beasley, Caris LeVert, Pascal Siakam, Dejounte Murray, Malcolm Brogdon

Donovan Mitchell, Bam Adebayo, John Collins, Jarrett Allen, OG Anunoby, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Miles Bridges, Kevin Huerter, Landry Shamet, Devonte' Graham

I think people are a little too dismissive of the value of that 1st round pick, not only in potential talent, but is the value of a rookie contract. I'm seeing 34 or 35 players in those names that are currently better than any of the Blazer youth, and several of those guys are either elite or all-star level, which is better than Covington. Both Zach and Trent will be RFA and getting extensions after next season, so there's a factor to consider as well. And, any rookie drafted in May will not be due for an extension till after CJ's contract expires...that's important

Ariza + a lottery protected first...OK. But no to the idea of Dieng and adding 27M in salary next season and a 3rd year of luxury tax

Seems to me that the Blazers have a guy on their roster who would fill that "perimeter offensive engine" slot nicely. CJ & Whiteside for Wiggins, Covington & Culver. Draft picks as necessary. Added bonus: Blazers end up under the Luxury Tax threshold.

I call this deal the @Neil O. Shyster Cream Trade.

Just realized that today is the day CJ's trade restriction expires. I mean, we all know he's not going anywhere, but now trade proposals including him are technically possible.

Yup. Well, he can't actually be traded until tomorrow, but I thought it was close enough to enjoy throwing out a theoretical deal including him. ;)

I love this deal!! BTW, has anyone else noticed how much Wiggins has improved... hits 3’s now, getting assists... much more well rounded game than in past years... still only 24 years old.
