I notice they have the saints getting a WR in the first round. I'm not sure the saints will want to go that route. I think they're much more likely to go for OL to keep Brees standing up straight, but maybe I'm wrong there.

 

OL and pass rush for Seattle. No matter how they go about doing it. Unfortunately we'll have to burn some draft capital or FA $ on a RB to hedge injuries. So tired of drafting RB's.

It's an interesting year for QB's I don't remember a year with so many guys who have been good, who are FA's, Rivers Brady, I think Cam is being released or is an FA(?), Mariota has been ok in the past, Winston (not sure what his situation is), Tannehill, Teddy Bridgewater, Dak. Not sure if some teams will be saying we think we can get a guy who is already ready to play in the NFL, or we want to target a young guy in the first round.

This article is basically talking about 49ers trading Jimmy G back to NE and Signing Brady. That would be... different. What do you 49er fans think?

 

My initial answer is hell no, but I don't know if I'd be mad if it happened.

I think Jimmy G is going to be better next year now that he has a full season of recovery from his knee injury. Unless your name is Adrian Peterson it often takes a whole season before players are truly back to themselves. He also has an incredible record in games he's started so far.

If Brady was to succeed on another team I think it would be tough to find a better spot than the 49ers though. Their run scheme can help mask a lot of Brady's age issues. Their offensive line is above average. Their defense is really good and should be over the next couple years. While his physical skills are fading, I think I would trust his pre-snap reads more than Jimmy G right now.

I think if something like this did happen the reason I would ultimately be okay with it is that it would mean that Shanahan and Lynch have lost faith in Jimmy G long term. Whatever the reasoning behind that decision is I think I would trust that they know what they're doing. It does make some sense to get out of Jimmy G's contract (and what they'd have to pay him moving forward after that contract) although nothing bugs me more than the NFL's cap structure of having dead money on the books even if you trade a player, luckily in this case they gave him a ton of money upfront when they had a lot of cap space two years ago. You get Brady as a stop gap for a couple years for what I'd assume to be the same or less value. I'd also assume the Patriots would have to give the 49ers some sort of draft capital in that deal too. Then the 49ers have two years to groom Brady's replacement. Then when Brady retires in 2 years and most of your younger guys are coming up for new contracts they'd theoretically have a young and cheap QB waiting in the wings that would allow them to use money elsewhere like what Seattle did before Russell Wilson got paid.

So yeah, I guess I could be talked into it but if it were up to me I'd say no.

 

I think the only franchises Brady makes sense for are the Raiders and Chargers... I'm not sure how many people watched him last year but he's just old... He makes sense if you're just trying to stir up a new fan base. His mind is still incredible, but he can't throw much further than 10-15 yards very well anymore. It might be ok in a run-heavy team like the 49ers, but it's a move with almost no long term goals in mind.

I think it's really interesting if maybe the thinking is hey the 49ers are going all-in before they start having to pay those defensive players, but I think I agree with you that I wouldn't want to do that either.

See I think those two teams only make sense from a "fan" perspective. It would be a disaster on the field because Brady's diminished skill set with those teams would be brutal. Rivers actually had a slightly better QB rating than Brady did last year.

 

I'm basically saying that it would only make sense to get people to buy tickets to go see Brady. Which I think is basically what you're saying.

I'm not going with names but just positions.

Immediate needs - WR, IOL, pass-rusher
Other needs - CB (not REALLY a need but it depends on what we do with Jimmy Smith), RB (depending if we keep Ingram long-term which I'm not TOO sure to be the case), ILB (most underrated need for us)

 

Which become one-year stars for the Ravens (see Forsett and Collins).
