The director of White House Office of Personnel Management abruptly resigned after barely a year on the job. Trump appointed a 29 year old with no experience over her, to verify all personnel were sufficiently personally loyal to Dear Leader. He hired three deputies, 20 year old college students whose only qualification was membership in College Republicans at their respective institutions, none had even graduated yet. She got tired of these boys constantly looking over her shoulder.

And it's not like we're in a situation that calls for experienced competent staff, right?

It takes a while to gather up all the data so this is from 2017, but the year really isn't the number that matters. And this is not to make light of the current situation but rather to put it in context. As of yesterday, there are around 218 deaths https://corona.help/ in the US from C-19. The #10 cause on the Top-10 list is 'Suicide' at a total of 47,173. That is #10! C-19 is currently at 4/10th of 1% of the #10 leading cause of death in this country.

Of course there are more factors that go into it and there can certainly be a discussion about something intentional versus something contagious. But just from a numbers standpoint in terms of the panic, hoarding, markets, etc, it just doesn't seem proportional.

Again, it's not an either/or situation.

All of these other problems that you point out will continue.

What officials are trying to do is to lessen the impact of the virus so it doesn't overwhelm our hospitals and staff.

There are videos in this thread that shows the desperate situations in Italian hospitals.

That is starting to happen here.

You continually make posts saying that A is worse than B so response to B is not needed.

No, B is bad, very bad, but also B will make A worse. A + B is going to cause a lot of deaths in a short amount of time. We can help with the increase in both A and B by focusing on reducing B.

In this case in regards to A, response B is going to make A - A lot worse. The best thing for people who are suicidal is no human contact and social isolation...

I didn't get that from his post. He mentioned nothing about the health services, etc. He said the panic in the stores is not proportionate. Of course social distancing and what not is needed, but the panic is not.

I know he didn't mention health services but that has to be taken into account.

He has made multiple posts pointing out things that are worse according to the data that causes more deaths per year than what the virus has done so far. I don't think that is an accurate argument to make in this situation.

Why do you not think its accurate? Because the death toll is rising from the covid?

Stats still suggest more people will die in car accidents this year than from this. Should we ban driving?

If the virus fills up the hospitals and uses up the limited resources it will have a direct effect on patients with heart attacks, strokes, suicide attempts, car accident injuries, etc.

To point out that, using your example, that car accidents are worse, maybe, for right now, but the virus will make the treatment of car accidents worse.

You stated earlier that your mom is in a nursing home. And that nursing home has tested positive for the virus.

Now suppose a resident has a heart attack.

Before the virus paramedics would rush in, remove the patient, and take them to the hospital.

Now, with the virus, paramedics have to take much more precautions, establish a safe zone around the patient, take steps to protect the first responders and the patient. And then transport the patient to a small sized hospital that hopefully isn't at capacity and has the beds available.

With heart attacks, minutes matter. In this situation the minutes from heart attack to hospital treatment are going to increase, and increase a lot. So the virus is having a direct effect on other medical problems.

When does the response end up killing more people than the virus, or overcrowded hospitals though. It's a no-win situation. For instance, my wife is out grocery shopping none of our local stores have any food for the most part, she was told, Trucks aren't even showing up. That's going to get real, real quick for people. A lot of people will die from COVID19, a lot of people are going to end up dying from the response too. I think for all those people pushing super, super hard for like a full-on shut down and no one going outside, you gotta stop at some point and measure the very real risks to lives that are on both ends of the spectrum. Not everyone has stockpiles of food, medicine. Gotta have a balance of being socially responsible, and social distancing but while it's not an either-or, the death-rate appears to be a lot lower than the 4-5% they spoke about, especially considering there are more than likely thousands of people who have it and have 0 effects from it. I've seen countless rich people say oh I tested positive and haven't felt a thing.

Eventually, we'll have to go outside and just understand there's a new "killer" out there and learn that we should all practice better hygiene to keep from spreading this type of stuff. It's not an either-or but look at the statistics on the flu earlier this year.

Car accidents are definitely bad but when someone dies in a car accident it's over. The next car accident is unrelated and has nothing to do with a car accident from weeks ago.

For the virus we're still in the early stages. You take drastic measures now so that this virus DOESN'T end up on that top-10 causes of death list. If you don't think it's important by the time it is near that list than it would already be too late.

That article is from Feb 5th. Many of those deaths will turn to be the virus since we weren't testing for it then. I believe so far only the state of Washington has tested some of the dead and that was only the people who died in the Kirkland nursing home.

Still going by this website. The death rate in the US is currently at 1.36 now, again a good trend in the numbers. It's great that we're getting a lot more people tested. I think we'll end up seeing the positive number skyrocket as testing goes up. Of course, this takes time, we may see the trend spike up as cases go on, lets hope not.

You have 0 way of knowing that, it's just a guess.
edit: and it really doesn't address the point that was being made.
