Young people... Video dude probably knows nothing about Dave Winfield, who was a first-ballot hall-of-fame hitter, was actually drafted #4 overall as a pitcher (after winning a national title and CWS MVP), was also drafted by both the NBA and ABA after winning a Big Ten title in hoops, and was drafted by the Vikings despite having never even played college football. But sure, Ainge was the greatest multi-sport athlete ever...
When you watch the Utube vids of the 80's Celtics, you expected Ainge to perform. He had other great role players with him besides the starters. Scott Wedman, Dave Cowan, Schitching (sp) and Nate "tiny" Arcibald were also appreciated.
Jim Brown is still considered by many to be the greatest running back of all-time, is also in the lacrosse hall of fame, played college hoops, and also finished 5th in the nation as a college decathlete. I'd take him (as an athlete) over Bo 8 days a week.
Jim Brown was better at football than Bo was at anything, but I think I'd take Bo as a pure athlete. The physical tools he had are hard to believe--I'm glad he existed at a time where his exploits could be recorded on film, otherwise some of the factual things claimed about him would be dismissed as mythology. Jim Thorpe probably also deserves some mention in this discussion, but he did exist before television and in a completely different athletic era, so it's hard to compare him. But for a long time, he was considered the greatest athlete ever. He played pro football, baseball and basketball and won Olympic medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
No way. Did Jim Brown know tennis??? Did he know Golf????? Did he know lacross??????? Did h know hockey???????????????? He knows cycline, horse riding... hell he even knows Sunny!!!!! there is no contest.
Did you watch the video? I had no idea how accomplished Ainge was. Certainly more accomplished than Winfield.
Yes, I watched the video. And I don't know how you could say Ainge was more accomplished as an athlete (not including his coaching or executive career, because that's not an athletic feat) than a 1st ballot hall of famer. Because he played MLB? Nah...
Ainge was a scratch golfer, excellen Ive always said he's the best all around athlete from Oregon. He was one of these guys that excelled at a high level in any sport he tried. Golfing, tennis, swimming, soccer were sports he excelled at during his younger years. Not every great athlete can excel at just about any sport they dabble in.
