I watched the new Dirty Jobs, and tonights episode started off with Mike Rowe wrangling Snakes.

I hate snakes. Like, literally I cannot see them without freaking out . That exhibit at OMSI from (I think) last year with all the dead bugs, etc, had a few snakes. And even dead snakes freak me the hell out. Hell, when the Zoo has snakes, I cannot handle going in the area.

Similar to tight places for me. (que the Mrs HCP joke)

The old "Indian Caves" at Enchanted Forest are still something I cannot, to this day, do without having a slight panic attack.


So it got me wondering what are your biggest fears?

I just know someone will say "Donald Trump being elected/Joe Biden being elected"

quite a few years ago, I went out when it was almost dark to turn the water off in a flower bed....I saw something off to the side moving, kind of hopping toward me and hissing. It was a damn skunk and he sprayed my leg. It was horrible. Hosed myself off for 30 minutes. Washed with a half gallon of V-8 juice (tomato juice is supposed to work). Tried vinegar; every kind of soap we had. Rubbing alcohol. Three hours later my leg was raw and bleeding in places....and it still stunk enough I couldn't sleep that night. Misery

so yeah, my fear is getting sprayed by a skunk again. and when I go out at night I take a flashlight and do full reconnaissance of my surroundings every 10 feet. I've actually considered getting bear spray to use on the next belligerent skunk. I guess I could carry my 30-06

Rats.

Years ago I was sitting on a bench in the summer by McCalls Restaurant at waterfront park. I look down by my leg and there was 2 nasty ass rats. I jumped so quick.

I work out of swan island and have seen oversized rats rummaging through the garbage cans and in the building. They gross me the fuck out.
 
Just had a little episode with field mice last week while camping. Grabbed a frying pan and a flash light while everyone was sleeping. Unstaked the tent, grabbed the side I was hearing them from and flattened those suckers quick with a couple swings. Not sure how but the kids slept through it.

Spiders are worse than snakes. I make my wife kill all spiders in our house. I have no fear of snakes.
My biggest fear is of great heights. The worst way for me to die would be in an airplane crash. I remember when I went to Hoover dam and I looked down the spillway I got something of a panic attack. I also fantasize about the sheer terror the victims of the World Trade Center went through when they had to jump from high up in order fot get a few gasps of fresh air before they hit the ground.
I had a friend that had a tree fort where you had to climb up one tree and then cross a gang plank to the other tree that had the fort. Scared the holy bejeesus out of me.
So, yeah, it would be heights for me even though I know being burned alive would be worse I just don't feel it emotionally like I feel the fear of heights.
You know, you could have gone years without making me think about that, so thanks a lot, dammit.
 
Scorpions freak me tf out. Never been near one, but just the idea of them. Might be that I was traumatized by that scene from "Honey I Shrunk the Kids".

In the event of an unfortunate future encounter:

1 quart hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp. Liquid dish washing detergent

Tomato juice is a myth and the rest of the stuff you used, well it’s not surprising your skin was messed up.
 
Not fond of yellow jackets. I hate eating outdoors in late summer just because of these aggressive bastards.

When we moved to the San Diego area we rented a townhouse in a new development while looking for a permanent residence. The townhouse was at the edge of the development near a hill our neighbors called "scorpion hill".

One evening, my oldest called me to get a big bug from the wall in the kids room - went there - and as you can imagine, a scorpion. Closest instrument next to me was a swimming fin which I used to smack and kill that bugger. My youngest was a swimming team member - and from that day on, we call swimming fins "scorpion killers".

The housing office did not believe there was a scorpion in the house, but a couple of weeks later I caught another one in a jar, brought it to the housing office, put it on the manager's desk - so they will send exterminators to deal with it.

Personally, rattlers worry me more than scorpions.

If I remember my biology correctly, most scorpions are not that poisonous.
When I was 17 I was working with my dad, who was a bricklayer, in Atlanta. We got our brick from Texas. One time I found a scorpion in with the brick. All I had was an empty coke bottle so I put it in that. I had nothing to cap the bottle with so I layed a piece of cardboard over the top. After a day of work we got back in our pickup truck to head home and I checked and sure enough the scorpion was still in the bottle covered by the cardboard. It must have taken half an hour to get home. When we got home, voila, no scorpion in the bottle which by now was laying on it's side with the cardboard no longer near the bottle which was now empty. I said "Oh, well." and went inside until we left for work the next day. Never saw the scorpion again with no idea what became of him.

Do they kill mice?
Oh, just remembered. Our cats killed mice, baby rabbits, small snakes and the occasional bird.
We had one Tom Cat that use to fight with raccoons. Our great big German shepherd would chase them up a tree and then that idiot cat would go up the tree in hot pursuit. One time our cat came back from a night of carousing with the raccons missing one fang and a huge gash in his side. We had to take him to the Vet to get him fixed up. No, not fixed, he'd have found a way to kill us if we had messed with that. Our dog was also fearless. He was a notorius cat killer. One time we moved into a new neighborhood and went around to all the neighbors warning them to let us introduce their cats to our dog. Once introduced he'd leave those cats alone. Even our cat was more a partner in crime with the dog than an enemy. You saw how they paired up to harass the raccoons. They would sleep together and lick each other's fur. As long as our dog was around our cat was safe. So, back to the story. This one neighbor had a huge feral cat. That thing was massive. The owners declared that their cat needed no help and would probably wind up chasing the dog around the neighborhood. About two days later their cat was dead. I don't care how big the cat you'd better not depend on it taking on a 150 lb. German shepherd.

See, cats and dogs can work together.
 
I don't like Earwigs

IDK if I'm afraid of them, but the thought of them crawling in our ears as we sleep and eating our brains is kinda messed up.
 
Things I've only heard of, never actually seen: huge flying cockroaches in Florida and murder hornets.

I don't like them for other reasons plus they infested the apples as they rotted on the ground under our apple tree.

In general, I hate bugs.

We’ve always had cats but yes while they kill them they also bring them back to the doorstep or somewhere in the yard so we can all praise him. I don’t want to see a rat or mouse, dead or alive.
