Dolphins end Culpepper's brief stint in Miami, release QB
QUOTE

[IMG]MIAMI -- The Miami Dolphins released quarterback Daunte Culpepper on Tuesday, ending the former Pro Bowler's short stint in South Florida and wrapping up what became a contentious split between the player and the team. The Dolphins made the move in a one-sentence release, without further comment.Miami tried for weeks to trade Culpepper, the former Minnesota Vikings star who was acquired by the Dolphins before the 2006 season even though he was coming off major knee surgery. Culpepper never regained his form last year, struggling in four games before the team shut him down so he could continue rehabilitating the knee.A breach-of-contract grievance filed by the NFL Players Association on Culpepper's behalf against the Dolphins was scheduled to be heard Wednesday, after the team told Culpepper he couldn't fully participate in offseason practices. That move came shortly after Miami traded with Kansas City for quarterback Trent Green, who's expected to be the new starter for the Dolphins.Culpepper said his attorneys were told by the Dolphins on Monday night that he would be released, and the veteran formally became a free agent Tuesday."As I was going through this process I heard about a quote by Gandhi that best expresses my thoughts about this victory: 'First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win,'" Culpepper, who serves as his own agent, said in an e-mail. "Now that I have won my freedom and I get to choose my next team, I am just like many other people who have to go out and find employment so that I can take care of my family."The Jacksonville Jaguars are thought to be among the potential suitors for Culpepper; coaches there told quarterbacks Byron Leftwich and David Garrard earlier this offseason that they would consider acquiring him before training camp if he was available."I just hope that there is still a team or two out there that has an opportunity for a hard working quarterback who is willing to come in and contribute wherever needed," Culpepper said. "I am ready to get into a training camp so that I can prepare for the 2007 season."The Dolphins would have owed Culpepper $5.5 million this season. It's not known if they came close to moving him in a trade; Culpepper vowed to block any such moves, saying he wouldn't accommodate the Dolphins by agreeing to a new contract. His existing deal, which would have paid him $51.5 million through 2013, surely made it nearly impossible for Miami to find a team to trade with.In 84 games as an NFL starter, Culpepper completed 64.2 percent of his passes and thrown for 21,091 yards and 137 touchdowns.
Link

I don't get it. I realize Culpepper has been on and off with injuries throughout the past season, but you need to get something for this Pro-Bowl QB. Releasing him isn't helping the Dolphins, especially when they could have gotten something in return for him from a team that needs a starting QB or a solid backup...

He should sign with the lions, Calvin Johnson could be just what he needs to ressurect his career and hes no worse then jon kitna is. Especially in Mike Martz offense with a strong reciever group, he could excel and they cant get any worse.

He's a good player, but injuries have hampered him and a lot of teams don't wish to gain a QB that pretty much would want to start, especially if they already have a true number 1.

Culpepper would be alot better for the young receivers because he's more of a passer than Vick ever was/will be.. I'd like to see him come here..

Its a risk you take if you sign Culpepper to a contract because he'll end up being hurt. Even though he said hes 100 percent and feeling better than last season, time can only tell what will happen to him. I agree on the point that Detroit needs a better quarterback, but I think he might end up going to the Jags.

Imagine what a healthy daunte culpepper could do there. Especially with the acquisition of Calvin Johnson.

Daunte Culpepper has problems reading defenses, and really has problems making good decisions when he doesn't have a good offensive line. Not to mention he's probably not the same Daunte Culpepper that we saw a few years ago. He's been out of football for a long time. Daunte Culpepper was a good QB, a little overrated...he's a mystery right now.

He also has more mobility then kitna and they did get a decent aquisition on their o-line in mulitano who was once a pro bowler who blocked JL his way to 2000 yards. He was never really that bad at seeing the field like you say either, 2 years ago he was the alltime most accurate qb. [IMG] He's still got some game in him I believe but like you said, its a mystery but a team like the lions have nothing to lose.

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio told quarterbacks Byron Leftwich and David Garrard earlier this offseason that they would consider acquiring quarterback Duante Culpepper before training camp if he was available.Del Rio did not return calls seeking comment after Culpepper was released Tuesday, but during the club's minicamps in May, he said that if Culpepper joined the team, it would be as a backup to Leftwich.Link
