QUOTE

July 19, 2007 - 12:54 pm Miami Herald - The Wizards reportedly had been holding out for a team that also would take on one of the bloated contracts belonging to center Brendan Haywood (three years/$16.5 million), guard Antonio Daniels (three/$18.6 million) or forward Etan Thomas (three/$20.6 million) along with Juan Carlos Navarro. To execute such a deal, the Heat would have to send a player or players due similar salaries for at least next season, such as Jason Williams, Antoine Walker or Udonis Haslem. It's unclear if the Wizards are interested in either Williams or Walker, and the Heat has been reluctant to offer Haslem in the deal.
http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/472...g_with_navarro/ It is clear that getting rid of Brendan, Etan, or Antonio would be a move to create cap space for the signing of Gilbert Arenas next season. The Wizards need to make sure that they have enough money to offer Arenas a maximum contract so that he stays. I hope the Wizards don't give up Antonio Daniels, he's a solid contributer off the bench with great court vision and veteran leadership. Besides, without him the Wizards don't have a backup PG unless the plan is to bring in Jason Williams.
I agree with you about not letting AD go, he contributed greatly in Arenas' position for the playoffs and despite his hefty salary for a player of his caliber, he's an important piece of the puzzle. Then again, I definitely wouldn't mind Jason Williams on this team.. unless if he's okay with being the backup PG behind Gilbert. He isn't the 'flashy' PG anymore like he was with the Kings, he is a good playmaking PG and plays under control. He also gives us extra perimeter shooting off the bench. Getting Haslem would be great for us, as well, but it's pretty clear that the Heat don't want to give him up.
We don't need to clear room to sign Arenas. We can resign him using Bird rights. We need to clear salary to keep from paying the luxury tax. Going over by a dollar costs 1.9 million.

Theo Ratliff's $12 million expiring deal, and possible a small filler (Telfair? He's also expiring), for Haywood and Daniels seems pretty nice for both clubs. We fill our holes and Washington saves a lot of money and also gets a look at Telfair, who could have a solid year this year. I think Telfair would actually do a pretty solid job in Washington's faster paced system.

I'd do that, but giving up AD would kill.. even if his contract is rather large for a player of his caliber. Well, we get expirings plus a young PG in Telfair whom I've always admired no matter what. Telfair would probably get good minutes behind Gil (as ironic that may seem), considering the fact that Donell Taylor won't cut it as the 2nd string PG. Bassy would probably get 25 mpg, maybe even 30, depending on the situation. We have a 'real' players' coach here in DC with EJ, and I'm sure him and Telfair would get along fine. Giving up Haywood would hurt our team's post defense, but Andray proved that he could produce on both ends of the floor, being a versatile offensive player, as well as being a very active rebounder and shot blocker. I think he demonstrated this well when Caron was out.

However, Abe Pollin dislikes people who have recently had run-in's with the law. The night-club issue in October and the recent gun scandal will probabely score Pollin off of him. I'll be surprised if he comes to Washington.
If they actually paid Navarro to come here, giving up Daniels might be worth it if it gets the financial house back in order.

Navarro's not a known commodity but he's reported to be very good. He might make up for losing AD, plus be younger. But if they didn't sign Navarro (they appear to have no interest) and then move AD on top of it, we just look to take a big step back.
