one thing i did notice is that a bench of vets seems pretty useful. the extended bench of potentials, possibles, and maybe nevers, seems to be much less effective.

Gonna straddle the fence on this one. I absolutely do not blame Ariza for opting out. Pretty much every player and coach on the team agrees with this. But it would have been nice to have known the exact nature of the possibility of opting back in.
Here is another thing some might not be thinking of. Ariza would have needed to stay in shape or get in shape if he was going to opt back in at a later date. Maybe his whole idea was more like he didn't want to spend a number of hours every day he had available with his kid working out. Or resting from working out? Being with and spending time with can be two very different things.
Coming back after 4 months off and then another month just hanging with your kids can put you very out of shape.

Wow, the Ariza hate is crazy shit. I mean the guy chose his son and I think he was ill informed. I think if the league and/or Neil would have said, you don't have to opt out and you don't have to show up, Ariza would have been like, "Cool, then why would I opt out." The fact is Neil didn't fill the last two available roster spots so he should have told Ariza, that there is no penalty for the team or Ariza if he opted in and didn't show up, he should have advised Ariza to keep his and the team's options open, since for whatever reason Neil didn't feel like filling those last two open spots on the roster. Also the NBA should have looked at the situation like human beings and let him come to the bubble when he wanted to, we had open spots on the roster and injured players. He should have been able to come into the bubble the same way Lou Will came back. Whoever you want to blame, I don't think the blame falls on Ariza... if he's not guilty of assaulting his son then it's obvious that he had to take the time with him when his son's mother said he could because she seems to be doing everything she can to take his son from him permanently.

That's really insensitive and foolish. If Ariza is guilty of criminal child abuse, it's nothing to joke about and if he's not guilty it isn't funny either. If you're being serious, get real. The police saw the evidence and referred it to family court, in other words they determined that nothing criminal took place. So an arrest obviously isn't happening. So yeah your post was in bad taste and just plain stupid.

    Two true things:
    1. Ariza was absolutely right to choose being with his son (although let's hope the abuse allegations aren't substantiated)
    2. Gary Trent probably would not have blossomed in the way he did if Ariza had been in the bubble.
