    Re: Incredible Offseason!!!

What the Rockets have lost this offseason...-Juwan Howard: He is not very productive anymore, and just isn't athletic enough or good enough defensively to do anything about the best PF's in the league.-Vassilis Spanoulis: Said he wouldn't play for the Rockets, was not productive last year.-2 future 2nd round draft pick. What the Rockets have gained this offseason...-Steve Francis: Not as athletic as he once was, and his mentality and style of play is fairly questionable. But, he came to Houston, turning down bigger offers and bigger roles from other teams, so his attitude seems to be in check. He will fare much better in a Rick Adelman offense than JVG or Larry Brown offense (or for that matter playing next to Marbury/Crawford/Nate/Richardson/etc..). He also has a great relationship and connection with Yao. He can create his own shot and do it effectively, which was a big missing part of the Rockets' offense last year. He also can pass well, handle the ball, and rebound very well. I think he can be a very nice addition, much better than Rafer.-Mike James: Again, his mentality of being a shoot-first player is a bit worrisome, but he will be instant offense if he comes off the bench, and like Francis, can create for himself. He will also make up for the 3pt shooting likely lost with Alston and that francis doesn't help much with.-Luis Scola: Not sold on him being a starter yet, but the guy is a pretty good scorer, decent rebounder, and will fit in better than Hayes in terms of offense. He is always active, and that is necassary in a princeton offense like Adelman runs.-Resigning Bonzi Wells: Another guy who will bring instant offense off the bench. He was not healthy all last year, and anything positive he gives us this year, specifically in playoffs, is really a bonus. He is the kind of player that can be an X-factor in a playoff series.-Aaron Brooks: Could be already argued as a steal of the draft. He dominated in summer league with averages of I believe 21PPG and 8APG. If Head ends up being traded, or if Francis gets hurt, he could fill in at the 1/2 spot as an effective backup.-Jackie Butler: Possibly a decent backup to Yao and Dikembe. -Other players that I am forgetting, including Landry and reed, 2 players that likely won't make roster but if a mass of injuries happens, could step in as backups.Basically, the Rockets had 3 major needs in the offseason- 1) Depth and upgrade at the PG position, 2) Depth at PF, 3) Guys who can create their own offense. They got 2 better player than Rafer at PG position, so no more seeing Rafer starting and playing 37MPG. They got a nice pickup in Luis Scola at PF. Along with those guys and Bonzi Wells, you got guys who can create offense for themselves, so you will never see only 4 players scoring in a playoff game like in game 3 vs the Jazz, or T-Mac going for 29/13 and Yao 29pts in game 7 yet still losing. Aaron Brooks and those other players are just icing on the cake. We gave up very, very little for so much in return. And the best part of all this? The Rockets still have Alston, Head, expiring contracts and if desperate, future draft picks to trade for a legit PF. All of those players, with the exception of maybe Head, are expendable, and should be able to net us a legit PF to fill in our needs at the position.Rockets are starting to look real, real good.

Yeah I have to admit, at least during this part of the offseason, Daryl Morey has me convinced that his fantasy stat loving self isn't going to be a negative in acquiring the right players. The change I'm most excited about was getting Rick Adelman as head coach. I'm waiting to see what they are going to do with their PGs in the upcoming weeks/months.

A PF that can rebound. In the playoffs we got killed because we couldn't rebound effectively(Game 7 mostly). And Haslem is the guy who can do that. Darryl Morey is on a roll and he should have something big coming up.
