<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (l?ckdown @ Jul 20 2007, 03:58 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>There is no need for him on the team. He wouldn't even get that much playing time. Sure, he is a great (albeit streaky) shooter, but like someone said before alot of the other people here can shoot. He won't have the ball as much as in Memphis, and he would barely do any damage. No knock on his game at all, just why bring in something you don't need?</div>Its obvious they want what he brings...which is why hes getting the opputunity to tryout for the team. And he isnt streaky....atleast not anymore. And not many can shoot better than him...like I said, nobody besides maybe Redd and Redick(which I doubt Redick will make it) can/will spotup shoot....which Miller can gladly do...and probably do it well. If he wont do any damage at all, or if they dont need him at all...why would they invite him to the camp?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (BluffCityBlue @ Jul 20 2007, 05:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>Only Redd, Kobe and Billups(who didnt even make it last time) can shoot 3s just as good or better than Miller. And once again, your talking about a player you obviously know nothing about. Yes his specialty is 3 point shooting, but hes a very nice rebounder, very good passer for his position and hes smart. He may not be a lockdown defender, but because hes got a high basketball IQ, he knows how to play team defense and help defense very well. Im not saying hes going to make it...but he was brought in to shoot 3s well, and if he does that and makes good decisions, he has a nice chance of making the team. You also have to balance the team out where certain players games compliments others. Besides maybe Redd and Redick....nobody else are going to simply do spotup shooting(Kobe could...but he probably wont). Mike Miller would be a very good spotupshooter. They just dont bring in guys just to cut them....and it seems by the way your post reads CB4, that its a obvious pick that Miller shouldnt make the team...which I disagree with....and obviously the USA Team staff disagrees with also.</div>It doesn't matter. All of these guys can shoot threes well, so why would they need another guard who ONLY shoots the ball on offense, pretty much. They don't need him, considering all the guys I mentioned are better suited for the team, and they can all shoot threes too. I will give you that he is a good passer, but getting 5 rpg in 40 minutes a game is not impressive at all. Yeah, but he's also not quick enough to keep up with faster swingmen. His defense is nothing to be proud of, at all. And why do perimiter defenders have to play good help defense? Help defense is something that is suited for interior players who help out on slashing offensive players. If Mike helped out alot on the perimiter, his man would be wide open for a three. The bottom line is, all of the guys I mentioned are better suited for the team. Explain to me why Miller would get a spot over any of those guys, will you? All of those guys can shoot just as well, or nearly as well as Miller, and they get it done in more areas than Mike Miller also.

Okay, Ill break down every player you said is good at 3s.<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (CB4AllStar @ Jul 20 2007, 03:13 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>Kobe, Shane Battier, Lebron, Michael Redd, Tayshaun Prince, Billups, Melo, and Kevin Durant can all shoot threes.</div>Kobe, Redd and Billups..I agree, all three are at the least just as good. Your overrating Princes, Melos and LeBron perimeter shooting. Melo is at best an average 3 point shooter, LeBron can be fire from there, but the can be inconsistant on how well he shoots from the 3 and Prince is a nice shooter but nowhere near what Miller is. Shane Battier is a stand in the corner get a pass and shoot type of player. He doesn't shoot 3s as well coming off the dribble. And Kevin Durant is questionable about his range...we've only seen him shoot from the highshool and college 3line. Mike Miller plays on the left/right of defenses, which allows him to play help defense on the big and small guards when they drive...thats one of the main reasons he played the 3 in Memphis becuase Rudy wasnt that good at it at the time. You also said all he does is shoot 3s....you have it all wrong. He can pullup for the midrange shot, he can defiently drive it(which is why hes so banged up) not to mention he can find the open man. People stereotype him as JUST a 3point shooter...even though they have never seen him play...which if you had you would know he isnt JUST a 3point shooter.

Who cares if Miller can shoot 3's a little better than those guys? USA basketball is not just about shooting threes. My point was that all of those guys are good 3 point shooters, so they wouldn't really need another 3 pt specialist. These guys get it done in other ways, more than Mike Miller can. All of them except Shane Battier and Tayshaun Prince (this is questionable) are better offensive players than Mike Miller. But Shane Battier is already a veteran on the team, he is as smart as you can be basketball wise, and he brings great defense and leadership to the table. Tayshaun Prince is a winner, a great defender, athletic, and he doesn't have to be the first or 2nd option to be able to score his points.Again, why would perimiter defenders play help defense on drivers? They wouldn't make it in time to prevent the other players from driving, because of court spacing. And it is the big men's job to help out on drivers when they are in the paint, not other perimiter guys. If perimiter guys helped out, it wouldn't make much difference, and their man would be wide open on the wing. I have seen him play. I didn't see all he does is shoot threes. I said he's mainly a shooter, and that's what he is. I know he can create his own shots, and also shoot from 17 feet...but he can't slash all that well, he's not that athletic, etc...

That is why they brought in Mike Miller....if they felt those other guys were just as good they would have never invited him.To explain to you how a 3 can play defense, we'll use a 2-3 zone diagram just because its a well known defense.[IMG]If a player drives past the 2 towards his right, who is there to help with the defense? The small forward. This is why specificly in the 2-3zone, 3point shooters get open form penetration because their man, the SF, is going to play help defense leaving the man in the corner open...but thats a whole other story.Point is, when you play the SF, you can play help defense from players getting past the two guards. Granted not all defenses are like that(like the 3-2)...but many defenses are like that...allowing the small forward to play help defense.

Those guys will improve the 3 point shooting enough, plus they are great overall players.Well, Mike Miller was also a two guard first of all, and I bet he spent significant time at that position too, not just the 3. And that's if it's actually zone defense...and what if the offensive three guard is on the perimiter, then what? And in man to man, it doesn't work like that because Mike would be chasing his defender all over the perimiter, therefor he would have no time or reason to play help defense on a slasher. And even in that formation where Mike is guarding a small forward who is actually only playing 10 feet away from the basket, Mike would not play help defense if the man was going straight to the basket, because then Mike's offensive player would be WIDE OPEN for a shot. He would only play help defense if the driver was forced to the side of the court, but that is an easy play, and not considered good help defense.

Kobe is Kobe Bryant, and he is an amazing shooter, spot up or not. Guys like Shane Battier, Tayshaun Prince, Michael Redd, and Melo all like to spot the ball up and shoot, and all the guys I mentioned are terrific overall shooters. You have to realize that they don't give out spots for just shooting the ball. If that were the case then Jason Kapono would be a lock for the team. All of the guys I mentioned are probably better suits for the team than Mike Miller. Again, threes don't play much help defense. I already explained that to you. And he plays the two also. The Grizzlies didn't always have Eddie Jones or Terence Kinsey last year.

They still gotta tweak that zone up a bit, considering the amount of times the perimeter guys got to the lane last game but I'm liking how the team is looking.
