I was thinking the exact same thing last night. I too clearly recall all the lamenting and wailing about how Rome was going to dictate how America behaved if Kennedy got elected President.

Not surprising that Amy Coney Barrett is a raging hypocrite. She is not pro life, she is pro forced birth.

A panel of judges overturned a Trump order blocking green cards for immigrants unless they could prove they will never need public benefits. She was only dissent. Another panel ruled on a case brought by prisoners against guards who thought it was amusing to fire their weapons in the cafeteria while prisoners were eating. They charged violation of 8th Amendment. Judges agreed, she was only dissent. She has promised to take health care away from tens of millions, although people have testified they will die.

And you can be damn sure Trump made sure she will do everything possible to keep him in office after he loses election, despite 204,000 dead and counting and still no plan.

She claims to oppose all sex outside Christian hetero marriage. Her one significant ruling made it harder for college students to bring charges against rapists. Consensual sex bad, rape good, and think of all the wonderful unwanted pregnancies. She opposes the 14th amendment, on which all civil rights laws are based, but in this case said rape charges discriminate against men.

In 2016 she said Mitch McConnell was correct in blocking nomination of Merrick Garland to Supreme Court. Since replacing reactionary Scalia with moderate Garland would fundamentally alter makeup of court, voters should be able to weigh in. Now ..

IMHO, the best case that the democrats can make against the scotus appointment and the republican senate lies here in the ACA debate. judge Barrett's multiple writings on the subject indicate that she will vote to void the law. taking away the healthcare of the majority of the citizens of the country and the pre-existing conditions clause during the pandemic is a pretty easy contrast in priorities between this administrating and senate and the democratic platform. to me this is the subject of the confirmation hearings, which will be televised that needs to be pursued, especially by Kamala Harris to broaden her appeal to the electorate before november's vote. attacking her religion will likely have a largely negative impact on public opinion.

Stabenow congratulates Coney Barrett, says she'll vote against her over health care

Coney Barrett got her current seat when McConnell blocked President Obama's nominee. The 7th Circuit, which covers Chicago area, is now the only all white circuit court.

She has also written that voting is not a universal right but only for "virtuous citizens". Presumably non virtuous means poor, people of color, gays, non Christians, single parents.

    And rape victims.

this is a long video, but worthwhile IMHO

The Notre Dame Club of Washington, D.C., hosted "An Evening with Judge Amy Coney Barrett" on February 19, 2019. Jon Heintz '09, '14 J.D. introduced Judge Barrett to the audience, and Megan Wold '11 J.D. interviewed the judge in a wide-ranging conversation about her family and professional life.

She stopped Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from investigating a case where it was alleged company assigned workers to geographic locations based on race/ethnicity. Also stopped an age discrimination case.

Frankly I don't give a fuck about her family.
She sure doesn't care about mine.
    Bet she doesn't like cats.

Presumably, non-virtuous means vile criminals, and the like. After all, voting is a privilege, not a right.

while i am sympathetic to your position concerning this appointee, this, IMHO, is a position/attitude that only contributes to the deep partisan divides. it is not helpful.

This entire past 4 years has forced me to get off my ass and dig a little deeper into the politics of America, and its history in general. The one debate I had to wrap myself around is whether this country is a Democracy or a Republic. I then had to try and determine the difference between the two (I hadn’t studied this crap since HS Civics class). And one fact became clear; America is NOT a Democracy (Majority rule). It never was, nor was it intended to be. It was (sorta) intended to be a Republic (representative government). But even the Founding Fathers knew (and wrote) that a “true republic” was not sustainable (see other republics in history), so what we ended up with is actually a “hybrid”; representative democracy (like most, if not every Republic in the world). In other words, majority rule is the law in many instances, yet the rights of the minority were intended to be protected from the majority. Unfortunately the left has tried to force the US into a “pure” democracy, which while that sounds “fair”, actually isn’t. The Constitution protects (supposedly) the rights of ALL citizens. But by attempting to foist majority rule on a country that was not founded on that concept, the exact opposite has happened. Constitutionalists dug in their heels and we are now a country held hostage by minority rule. And the left has only themselves to blame for this unfortunate situation. I’m all for progress but the Green New Deal, while admirable.....and necessary in the long run....is pretty much a 180 from where we are now. And unrealistic in terms of a quick (or easy) implementation. America is a big, unwieldy country that has made it totally clear this past year that it does not take to change easily. Hell, it take miles and miles of ocean to turn an aircraft carrier around. America is that air craft carrier.

Personally, I’m not going to get my hair on fire over this SCOTUS pick (because of course, I’m a white male) until I see how she rules on key issues. I have always (always) considered myself a moderate, but the way liberalism has become a speeding, out of control train, I’m not so sure having a right leaning Supreme Court is necessarily a bad thing (for the near future anyway) especially with it looking like the House, Senate and White House could be all Democrats. That is NOT the representative government the Founding Fathers intended. Some brakes are needed to protect the rights of those citizens who do not support a pure democracy.

All that said, I DO NOT support the minority inflicting their moralities on the majority in ways that restrict or deny basic human rights. The minority does not seem to get that, despite their demands that their own rights be protected. The hypocrisy is naked and stark. But I do think every thinking American at this particular time should make an effort to educate themselves on what the Founding Fathers actually intended (And what a Republic is versus a Democracy) before casting their vote. It may (not or may not) clarify some of the issues currently confronting us. At least we’ll have a clearer understanding of what we are voting for, why we are voting that way and what the potential (and real as opposed to straw man) effects of our vote might lead to. (Steps off soap box and retreats under a hail of rotten tomatoes........)

Honestly, I really don't care about any public figure's family unless it directly impacts policy.

Vile criminals like gay people and women who have abortions.

Voting is a right. It is not earned by being "virtuous".

this is a legitimate position for discourse, the rhetoric of "fuck" indicates a stronger hostile opinion IMHO

One thing that bothers me about radicle progressivism is segregating Americans into identity groups which to me is bigotry. I like to think for myself rather than part of group think, that freedom can offset stereo typing and bigotry. Im white but i dont represent all white people.

I get it. But we are going to see her seven children paraded before the cameras ad nauseum and hear what a nice family, shouldn't she be in the court? What I see is a woman teaching her children my very existence is an abomination and I have no right to exist on this earth.
