Of course they don't have an obligation. I'm not sure how much his value changed, the guys available last week are probably still available now. It doesn't seem like any team but the Nets or maybe the 6ers if Simmons is available are possible. A team still needs to have enough to contend after acquiring Harden so that makes it very hard to also give up talented players yet still retain playoff talent.

We will see... teams like the Spurs and Twolves thought like this that they didn't have an obligation, they waited, then traded Kawhi/Butler for not much.

I hear that. I wasn't saying I was on board. Just thought I would pose the question.

waiving a player doesn't get his contract off the team salary base. It clears a roster spot but doesn't clear the financial obligation

Yeah for sure, just any talk about adding a player is moot because we dont want to go into the tax and were only $600K below.

A player in the buyout market wouldnt put us into the tax though. That'll be interesting.

Okay. Excuse my ignorance here because i truly have quit keeping up like i used to.
I thought if a player gets waived he went on waivers and if no team picks him up he then that team must pay his salary?
Then another team can sign him? Doesn't that constitute a buyout?
Now that i'm thinking about it though would the Blazers have to pay him a vets minimum? Which of course poses another question about what would that be for Barea?
Like i said i have pretty much quit following the contractual side of the game.

In the end i do understand the Tax and that the Blazers absolutely must stay under it unless they want to go all in on the repeater tax route which probably would be foolish.

I see that Jacob Evans was just released (again) by a team.
Since I at one time believed he was a better pick than Gary Trent, this proves that sometimes Neil Olshey is smarter than me! (or at least his scouts are). Might also prove that it's difficult making evaluations by reading draft profiles on the internet! :)

well, as you said, Olshey has a scouting staff and he's paid as much as 6 million/year, in part, for his draft evaluations. I'm paid $0/year for mine. How about you?

that will depend of the player and the timing of the buyout, no?

I mean, a 600K margin margin below the tax line isn't much room at all.

unless of course, I'm not understanding the rules. As I understand it: the minimum salary this year is 1.7 million. The amount of the signing would be pro-rated by the percentage of the season left, in days. The season will be about 155 days long if my math is right (regular season = Dec 22 - May 16, assuming the play-in tournament doesn't count). So then, a minimum signing with 53 days left of the season would result in a 582K pro-rated salary. That would mean the Blazers couldn't sign a vet any earlier than March 24-26.

that should still leave 25-28 games in the season. That's a pretty substantial chunk of the season left. But, for any vets of value, the Blazers would be competing with teams that have exceptions left and can pay more than a pro-rated minimum. Hopefully, Portland will be in the thick of the HCA playoff hunt and can be an attractive destination as a short-time gig for a bought-out FA

The minimum is $1.6M, and that date range is when the buyout market would likely take place anyway.

Yep. Your calcs here are correct.

NO is planning on spending every last penny he can (without going into the tax). He has 1 open roster spot and just enough room below the tax line to sign a vet as a FA mid-season.
