regular occurance or temporary issue?

p.s. I'm surfing other website, pages, forums without issue so it's not on my end.

still slow, I understand it can take time with such a huge change.

I tried out the trivia, got his message twice after clicking on the answer for 2 different questions.

As you know, this morning the site was dogging it. Being that the software is so new, it's never been tested on the kind of load we got all at once. It took a while to figure out the problem. It was a double-edged kind of sword - having all you guys loading pages showed me the problem, but all you guys loading pages made it much slower to do the kinds of things needed to fix it; and the fixes slow the site down in their own right for a few minutes here/there. Turns out the fix was something rather trivial, but needs to be done across more of the database. Rather than putting the posters through more stress while doing the additional tweaks, I thought it best to give them room to vent and make their plans to leave or whatever.

Being moved to a new site and software platform is clearly the big news, that's what people want to post about, and we're not really doing much to prevent them from doing whatever it is they want to do.

The site is minimalistic and drawn with as much css and minimalistic elements as I could. While it may look like something you used with a modem some years ago (10?), there's a bit more to the strategy than meets the eye. This minimalistic display trades big graphic elements (that don't add a thing to the words people write) for equivalent amounts of javascript. It's use is subtle, but really does make the site work better. Stuff like when you get a PM, you don't have to reload the page to see it (see upper left of the page, below the logo). Or autocompletion of usernames where you need to type them in. Or the members online on the home page changes dynamically as new people come on the site, again without you needing to reload.

The forums really are highly customizable. What you're seeing in this forum or thread is very basic and unmodified. vBulletin looks pretty lame out of the box, as does IPBoards. We have 8000+ forums (1000+ for NCAA hoops alone), and it's going to take time for the mod crew to hit them all and customize them all. You've seen the celtics forum, I'm sure. It's barely been customzed as-is.

thanks again for the info. A MMA site I visit, mma.tv is set up in a very simple display method too. check it out if you're looking for any ideas. www.mma.tv (click on underground forum)

the trivia error, is that a new thing or is it a known issue that needs fixing?

Iwas wondering if having the forum listingappear below the quick reply when you open apost to read itis eating up load time. (ie look below)

I was in the gfx display area (finally found it lol) and it was the slowest pages I found. I was thinking it may be due to how huge the forum listing was below the quick reply on the page. just a thought.

Yeah, it does seem like the forum listing is slowing down the page in the graphics section.

Yeah, I've known about the trivia error. There's a couple of guys on the site who want to work on a better trivia question database, so my plan is to let them build up a decent number of questions and then I'll revisit the whole thing. It was a quick way to get a 2nd game on the site, and we do want to push games as one of the differentiating features of S2 as we go along. So we'll eventually have over 30 games by my figuring.

The graphics forum is simply showing too many items per page. That's what's making it take so long. I'll fix that ASAP.

The editor is a pig. It takes a while to load and it then loads in a bunch of modules for itself. I have all the features turned on for it all the time so people can see all it can do and I can get feedback on it. There are other smaller ones I can basically drop in, but this one is highly regarded and used in a large number of CMS systems.

My hope is that having a full featured editor will encourage people to make posts and other content that are more like sports articles in their own right. It's plenty good for making short posts, but my experience is that there are times I want to write up some big long thesis kind of post, and then the extra features are really useful.

I'll check out your post re: suggestions. I keep a big "to do" list of these kinds of things and work on getting them done constantly...

    Regards
