QUOTE

July 28, 2007 - 10:44 am Washington Times -
According to two league sources, the Washington Wizards last night offered restricted free agent forward Andray Blatche a three-year deal worth about $11 million.

Blatche was said to be mulling over the offer last night, one source said.

The offer is substantially smaller than the one Blatche and his agent, Eric Fleisher, are said to be looking for. Blatche, who turns 21 next month, has had his name mentioned as a player who might possibly receive the mid-level exception, which has a starting salary of $5.35 million in the first season.

Wizards should keep this offer on the table for some time and wait to see what other the Cavs, Nets, and Mavericks offer for him. They likely won't offer a much bigger contract because many teams still consider him a project. No need to overpay Blatche until we see him recieve a bigger offer. However, it seems as though all three of those teams are pursuing different options. The Nets drafted Sean Williams then signed Jamaal Magloire but still could use an offensive big man, the Mavericks are looking at Chris Webber right now, and the Cavs I'm not sure how interested they are.

I think that's a very fair deal to Blatch. Truth be told, he still looked pretty shaky to me even after some PT when Jamison and Butler were hurt. I think he's gonna turn out, but I'm still not sold and 3 years is a long committment to a guy I'm not sold on.

I agree that it is a risk, but if Ernie and many Wizards fans are right about his potential, he could definitely be worth it. Remember that he's only 2 years after high school, and this season was his real rookie year because of the 'shooting incident' right before last season. If we keep Blatche he could potentially turn out to be the post scorer with range that will fit Eddie's princeton offense perfectly. On the other hand, you don't know if Blatche will reach his potential so as I said before, it's a reach.

Don't get me wrong, I'd do 3 yrs and $11M. I think it's a risk, but at the end of the day, that's not like a franchise killing risk by any stretch. Especially when you look at the Wiz. Unless Andray and/or Pecherov really develop into top notch players and prove to be steals, I don't see how we get much further beyond where they're at. We just don't have any other means (draft picks or cap room), so we have to hope these guys turn out.

I do like them both, so I think they could be very sold or even good players, but it just seems far away at the moment.

Compared to what other guys get for potential, this isn't bad.

That was likely the dumbest comment I've ever read. Andray Blatche was a second round draft pick, there's now ay he can turn out to be a bust like Kwame Brown.

I think it's a good deal for the Wizards.

Big men who are athletic and can shoot tend to make a lot of money in free agency.
