OT Coronavirus: America in chaos, News and Updates. One million Americans dead and counting

Seniors in congregate care facilities and people with disabilities are eligible to be vaccinated in the first group. Those who aren’t in one of thos groups still have to wait. Governor Brown decided that getting teachers vaccinated is more important than keeping the oldest and most vulnerable Oregonians alive. Starting this week, teachers and support staff will be eligible. Two weeks after that, people over 80 become eligible, followed each subsequent week by folks in the 75+, 70+, and 65+ groups. The decision to delay by two weeks the vaccination of those age groups will directly contribute to the deaths of several hundred elderly people.

There are multiple things that are dumb about this misguided plan. First, as I posted above, opening schools at this time can only accelerate the spread of the disease. That will increase the strain on hospitals and doctors. Second, school districts that are looking to reopen soon are mostly planning to open in a limited way, usually K-3rd grades. The teacher vaccination program, however, isn’t limited to those who will actually be teaching live classes. How stupid is that? The Governor said it will take about 100,000 doses of the vaccine for teachers and support staff. That’s 100,000 elderly people who have been pushed back in line. Simply reading the Oregonian’s daily list of the names and ages of the people who have died from Covid-19 will tell you how brutal this policy decision is for the elderly. Now, with the new more transmissible variant showing up in Oregon, we can expect the number of cases to accelerate. Getting the most vulnerable people protected now, before it becomes the predominant strain, is essential. The Governor’s plan flies in the face of that.

 

Like I say, the most vulnerable have already begun receiving their shots. All Veterans in the VA nursing facility in Vancouver got their shots before the rest of us very vulnerable ones got ours two weeks ago. There were doctors coming in to get their shots that were lined up behind me. My wife is not quite 75 so she will have to wait another month to get hers especially since she has no underlying condition.

My 92-year old mother-in-law, who is pretty damned vulnerable, will have to wait an extra two-weeks while every teacher in Oregon gets vaccinated, including those who will continue to do on-line instruction from home.

the State of Oregon has dropped the ball in two or three major ways, including the advisory board on vaccinations not holding their first meeting until the 7th of January. That's ridiculous considering we've know since November vaccines were going to arrive sometime in January.

but the schedule had been that people 65 & older, along with teachers, were eligible Jan 23rd. That was until the Feds announced there were no vaccines in the stockpile they had promised were there. This is another trump-generated lie-filled fuck-up

but again, the state has plenty to apologize for. Just go to their website on vaccination schedules and try to figure it out. It's a damn joke

 

Sure, the Feds screwed up in communicating clearly to the states how much vaccine was available. Brown relied on that bad info in her original plan to open up to teachers and folks over 65 starting next week. When she found out it was bad information, it’s strictly her decision to promote teachers over the elderly. It’s a bad, bad decision and it’s going to kill a bunch of people.

 

Second friend of mine died in the past 36 hours..... this shit has to stop. My friend Neil was a player on the late 80s early 90s Jefferson HS teams and was an absolute beast.....father of 2...... loved this dude like a brother and he will be missed...... #WearAFuckingMask

 

It’s gonna be harder getting the teachers back to school than it is the kids.

I have a huge family, living all over the country. Obviously with a bigger family, there are more chances of you having somebody you are related to getting it. Right now I have 8 cousins and/or aunts and uncles who are dealing with this all living in SoCal...... one in particular was just put on a ventilator and we are keeping an eye on his status.... just so sad it has come to this....
