Zambrano wins major-league leading 14th as Cubs top Reds

CHICAGO CUBS 6, CINCINNATI 0
CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Carlos Zambrano had more hits than heallowed on Sunday.

Zambrano, who had three hits at the plate, allowed two hits in 71/3 innings to earn his major-league leading 14th victory asthe Cubs blanked the Cincinnati Reds, 6-0, on Sunday.

Zambrano (14-7) struck out six and walked three before departingin the eighth inning.

Will Ohman finished the frame and Bob Howry retired the side inthe ninth for Chicago, which is a major league-best 33-17 sinceJune 3.

For his part, Zambrano is a major league-best 8-2 during thatspan.

The 6-5, 255-pound righthander has been the best pitcher inbaseball for nearly two months, winning each of his last fourstarts and seven of his last eight.

The Cubs staked Zambrano to an early lead in the first inning.

Aramis Ramirez doubled to right center to plate Ryan Theriot andadvance Derrek Lee to third. Lee came around to score on MarkDeRosa's sacrifice fly to center to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.

Chicago looked like it doubled its lead in the second inning.

With Zambrano aboard, Alfonso Soriano belted what should havebeen his third home run in the last two days. Replays showedthe ball deflected off a fan's hands and back into play.Zambrano and Soriano were then stranded as Theriot harmlesslyflied out to right field.

    It mattered little.

Lee chased Reds starter Matt Belisle after blasting a two-runhomer in the seventh to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead.

Belisle (5-8), who is now winless in his last 10 starts, allowedfour runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. He has not won sincedefeating the Houston Astros on May 29.

Zambrano wins major league-leading 14th as Cubs top Reds

CHICAGO CUBS 6, CINCINNATI 0
CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Carlos Zambrano had more hits than heallowed on Sunday.

Zambrano, who had three hits at the plate, allowed two hits in 71/3 innings to earn his major league-leading 14th victory asthe Cubs blanked the Cincinnati Reds, 6-0, on Sunday.

Zambrano (14-7) struck out six and walked three before departingin the eighth inning.

"The story of the game was Zambrano, his pitching not hishitting," Chicago manager Lou Piniella said. "He got cramps inhis thigh and calf. Taking him out had nothing to do withgetting hit."

In the sixth inning, Zambrano kicked a hard hit ball by RyanFreel to third base and Mark DeRosa made the play.

"The ball hit me on the back of my foot. I'll be OK. I juststarted cramping in my calf, but I'll be OK for next time,"Zambrano said.

As for his plate appearances, Zambrano tied his career high withthree hits. He also had three hits at Florida on July 20,2003.

"Anytime I can do something, running the bases, hitting, kickingthe ball, I will," Zambrano said. "I have to use all myabilities. This is the best streak I've ever had."

Will Ohman finished the eighth and Bob Howry retired the side inthe ninth for Chicago, which is a major league-best 33-17 sinceJune 3.

For his part, Zambrano is a major league-best 8-2 during thatspan.

The 6-5, 255-pound righthander has been the best pitcher inbaseball for nearly two months, winning each of his last fourstarts and seven of his last eight.

"Zambrano's a special pitcher," Cincinnati interim manager PeteMackanin said. "Everything was working. You can see why he hasthe record he has. What did he have, three hits? He wanted tosteal a base but we held him down there."

"He had a good cutter," Freel said. "He kept us off balance. When he's on like today, he can throw any pitch at any time."

With Zambrano aboard, Alfonso Soriano belted what should havebeen his third home run in the last two days. Replays showedthe ball deflected off a fan's hands and back into play.

"It look like it snuck in there," Piniella said.

Zambrano and Soriano were then stranded as Theriot harmlesslyflied out to right field.

    It mattered little.

Lee chased Reds starter Matt Belisle after blasting a two-runhomer in the seventh to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead.

"That was a big home run. It was good to see," Piniella said."It looks like he's starting to get good extension."

Belisle (5-8), who is now winless in his last 10 starts, allowedfour runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. He has not won sincedefeating the Houston Astros on May 29.

Since Mackanin took over for Jerry Narron, he has shown lesspatience with struggling starters. Belisle was yanked from hislast two starts before the fifth inning.

"Belisle pitched a little better," Mackanin said. "After thefirst inning he settled down. He had those bookend innings. The name of this game is consistency."

"When you give it up that quick, it's a good swift kick betweenthe legs," Belisle said. "It was definitely better today. Ithrew a lot more quality breaking pitches in fastball counts. Then I made a big mistake to the wrong guy."

Angel Pagan's two-run single to center in the ninth capped thescoring for the Cubs.
