Kendrick leads surging Phillies to sweep of Pirates

PHILADELPHIA 5, PITTSBURGH 1

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- A pregame downpour appeared to have
cooled the Philadelphia Phillies offense. Fortunately, KyleKendrick didn't need much run support.

Kendrick pitched seven effective innings and Aaron Rowand andRyan Howard each drove in a run as Philadelphia completed athree-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 5-1 victory onSunday.

After a torrential rainstorm delayed the start of the contestfor 12 minutes, the Phillies had trouble cashing in scoringopportunities against struggling Pirates starter Ian Snell(7-9).

Philadelphia had second and third with one out in the firstinning, but only scored one run courtesy of a Snell wild pitch. The Phillies then put their first two men on in the second, butSnell came back to strike out the side.

Rowand gave Philadelphia a 2-0 lead in the third on an RBIdouble off the fence in left, but the Phillies left the basesloaded.

Chris Coste drove in two insurance runs and Jimmy Rollins addedthree hits and scored two runs for the Phillies, who finishedtheir homestand taking five of six games.

However, Philadelphia was forced to add a player to the disabledlist for the second time in four days. After second basemanChase Utley suffered a broken right hand on Thursday, relieverRyan Madson was forced to leave this game due to a strainedright shoulder.

"You can't let injuries kill your spirit if you have a goodteam," Rollins said. "Good teams find a way to fight through itand we've been doing that. You don't expect breaks. You can'texpect anything to be given you."

Kendrick (5-1) allowed only a solo home run and scattered sixhits. He walked one with four strikeouts as he improved to 4-0at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia is now 7-2in games that the righthander has started.

"The main thing was to get ahead and keep the ball down,"Kendrick said. "I just pitched my game, pitched to my strengths. It was nice to get a sweep."

"He pitched very good today," Phillies manager Charlie Manuelsaid. "He keeps his poise. He studies the game. He works at iteveryday, mentally and physically."

"It's gotta be a total team effort," Rowand said. "When someguys struggle, it's up to other guys to pick them up. That's howit works. We've done that lately this homestand."

Rowand returned to the lineup after missing the previous twogames with a sore left shoulder.

"You can't let it get you down," Rowand said. "You've got tokeep plugging away and the biggest thing is getting the youngguys to come up and step into roles. They've done a good jobwith it and have not been overwhelmed. Guys like Kyle havereally picked us up."

Rollins collected his third hit leading off the fifth inningwhen he grounded a triple over the first base bag. Howardfollowed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

"We're definitely confident in our ability," Howard said. "Weknow we can go out there and we can hit with the best of them inthe major leagues."

Nate McLouth spoiled Kendrick's shutout bid when he lined thefirst pitch of the sixth inning over the right-field fence for ahome run that cut the deficit to 3-1.

Kendrick helped himself with the glove in his final inning. After surrendering a leadoff double to Jose Castillo in theseventh, he retired the next three batters, including making twofine fielding plays on comebackers to the mound.

"(Kendrick) found a way to get out of it," Rollins said. "That'swhat special guys do. He's been special for us this year.

"He gave us exactly what we needed. He kept us in the game untilwe found a way to push a couple of more runs (across) and givea little breathing room."

Madson came on for Kendrick in the eighth, but was forced toleave after straining his right shoulder on a 1-2 pitch to JasonBay. Antonio Alfonseca came in and threw one pitch to strikeout Bay and end the inning. Jose Mesa pitched a scorelessninth.

"I'm pretty sore right now," Madson said. "I thought I couldthrow through it. I didn't feel anything abnormal."

Philadelphia added two insurance runs in the eighth off ShawnChacon when Chris Coste had a pinch two-run single with thebases loaded.

"We knew that with Ian Snell on the mound, we weren't just gonnacome out and score 10 runs," Coste said. "We knew if we weregonna score three to five, that we were gonna have to earn themand we did.

"It turns out we only needed two runs. Fortunately, Kyle evenpitched better than Ian did. Kendrick was fantastic like he'sbeen pretty much all season here."

Snell allowed three runs and six hits in six innings forPittsburgh, which has lost 13 of its last 15 games.

"Snell battled through six (innings)" Pirates manager Jim Tracysaid. "He did a nice job of keeping us in the game."
